Yes, reportedly the E15 can be fitted to the rwd gearbox with some modification: E series OHC engine swap. But barpk, you will have to do it yourself, no one here has details on how to do it. (they didn't write down the details back when it was done).

Good point. Yet it could be done, the key is a reverse-cut camshaft.
But I doubt if barpk wants to re-engineer the engine or gearbox.

Hondas engines won't work in a RWD set-up. All Honda engines (except a few new ones) spin backwards. You would have 1 forward gear and 4 reverse gears.

barpk, any engine could be fitted to the gearbox, but it would requre at least that you fabricate an adapter plate, and in most cases you would also have to machine some parts of the transmission.
The only engines that fit the Datsun 1200 gearbox are the a-series engines (A10, A12, A13, A14, A15 and A12A).

I agree. Look for a RWD 4 cylinder car. And think about using the engine AND gearbox.
The technical considerations in making one gearbox fit on a completely different engine from a different manufacturer is almost impossible.
Different manufacturers probably use different pitch splines, different length input shafts etc. It's not a simple proposition. And certainly not something to be started while building on a budget.
Again, find a RWD car with a 4 cylinder, get the engine and gearbox out of that. Otherwise stick with your A-Series engines. Keep your eyes open for an A15.

In my humble opinion, I think youll get more enjoyment and reliability out of your A-series engine than trying to muck around and fit a dedicated fwd engine in your 1200.

You would use the engine and gearbox.
Using a front wheel drive engine, means you need to find a RWD gearbox to suit.
I don't think that using a 1.3L MAzda engine is a great idea. Surely you can find something better over there. Look for something bigger than 1400cc to make it worth the effort of making new engine mounts etc.
