enuff with the high beam sh1t already!

if you want a nice simple power up, a CA18DE and 5speed is a great power up. with a set of cams and individual throttles they're great little engines.

if you use a 180B front end under it you can utilise the engine mounts and crossmember which are spot on - and you could also adapt the larger stanza brakes with minimal fuss.

When you pull out your "high beam knob"??? I'm pretty sure that they don't have that.

If you pull the "headlight switch" knob to the frist position, [or first click], you should have either low beam, or parking lights. Which one of these is determined by the position of the "beam selector switch" [dip switch] which is located on the steering column.
In one position you have park lights, while the other gives you low beam.

BEFORE driving off, you should pull the headlight switch knob to the second click, or, full out position. The beam selector switch now alternates between high & low beams.
Rotating the headlight switch knob between the two available positions gives you two diferent instrument light intensities, Bright is for town driving, while dim is for country driving. At least, thats the way i remember it in my 1973 Datsun 1200 ute.
This should be all explained in the owners manual.
I know it's a bit of a weird setup, & it does seem to be unique to the 1200 & 120Y [that i know about] but it works OK once you get the hang of it.

Edit
Sorry L18_B110, i have just repeated what you have already writen [without looking first] except that i used more words [Brevity, the sign of a good writer?]

CAREFREE miles
I think this phrase has a lot of meaning:

- My first 1200 ran perfect -- after I got everything working smoothly. For years, every little thing, everything worked and I kept up with maintainence and "understood" my little car. When I drove it I didn't worry about it or think about what needed fixing "next"

- My current 1200 has several things needing work, including a few I'm not sure how to fix (slight surge when cold, odd bouncing problem at low speed, etc)

Although I'm enjoying the new 1200, nearly everyday I think about how satisfying it *will be* when all the kinks are worked out

Not supposed to work like that. See L18's post earlier in this topic.

Your ideas of upgrading to the SR20DET sounds like a pretty ambitious project & it should be one slick car when finished, but for now, taking into account your difficulty in working the light switch, & in finding dip switch, as well as the idle adjusting screws, permit me to suggest that you secure a Gregories service & repair manual for your car, & you use it to become quite familiar with what you have already, BEFORE launching into a major re-engining project.

Even a stock 120Y can provide a great deal of satisfaction if you study the manual & tune up the whole car to perfection. The satisfaction gained from having the engine running sweetly, the clutch adjusted right & the brakes functioning just the way they should will be worth much more than the manuals purchase price.

Once you have learned about your car, & enjoyed a few thousand carefree miles, you will be in a better position to be making judgements on what to do next. Just don't be so keen to rush in & take on a project that is obviously, at this time, far beyond your ability.

One step at a time & you won't go wrong.
Chris
P.S. My No.2 son has a stock 120Y & it's a sweet thing. We gave it a full, major service & fixed everything that was in need of attention. It looks & runs sweet with it's 13" mags & will seve him well for a while to come. We all love it.

I like it,I would prefer dark grey, charcoal or black wheels though(and probably wider, more rubber), but , can not complain, excelent.
