Okay, after a lot of confusion, head scratching, and research last night, I think I got it all figured out. I will write it up in my SR20DET conversion page, so check that out if you want to know!

The wiring harness was originally from an automatic. Apparently there is some extra wiring in there, but I'm not sure exactly what all is different. There is another separate smaller looking ECU that was mounted above the actual ECU. The wires from it wire into a transistor for A/T and then it looks like they go into the TPS too and then back into the body harness. If anything I'd like to disconnect this whole piece, but I'm not sure if it's all interconnected yet or not. This harness stuff is getting me loopy trying to figure out what goes where and what is tied into what. If I had a 180SX A/T or M/T wiring diagram complete with colors and sensor types labeled, I would be set I think. The ECU Pin out will help, but how do those numbers correspond to the wires exactly?!! So apparently I will need all the Relays, fuses and such that are tied into the power cable??? Boy this will be a HUGE job. I can't really do anything until I've got a better wiring diagram like our old Datsun ones. Thanks so far, but there's still more to learn

I reckon I can help here.

The 2 looms are engine loom and dash loom.

Speed sensor, tacho, and 12V ignition and start signal are the important ones (generally) from the dash loom.

All the rest will need to connect up to fuel pump relays, ECCS relays and important fuses.

The SR20 has a ignitor pack (transistor pack) which needs to be kept wired into the multicoil circuit.

For the engine loom, think of it in 4 parts.

1. Electrical stuff: Alternator, Starter motor, knock sensor
2. Ignition: Coilpacks, Transistor pack
3. Fuel: Injectors (ballast resistor for injector impedence?)
4. Sensors: water temp, TPS, CAS, Idle Control, Airflow Meter, O2 Sensor, A/C Idle Control

There is no method of hook it up and get it running.

There is the method of: hook up sensors, wire up the fuel pump, connect correct wires to ignition 12V, always 12V, and start 12V, then remove all of the crap (Including check connectors), and then spend a week shortening all of the wires, because they are all between 1 foot to 3 feet too long.

Do you have the S14 wiring diagram for the SR20?

I have a PDF that might help, if you need it.

Chris

Today I pulled ALL of the wiring/electrical out of the 180SX, ALL 60-70 lbs OF IT! I have searched all over the internet but not found any good write ups of how to hook up an old Datsun (1200, 510, 280Z, et) to a SR20DET electronics-wise. What parts do I need and what parts do I not need?!! I'm fairly competent at doing electrical work, but not quite as involved as this.

The wiring harness splits up a few different ways. Starting from the ECU, one bundle of wires goes out to the engine containing all the stuff to control the engine (coil packs, ignitor, timing control, idle air control, etc). These wires all have to be used/hooked up to the engine, no problem.

Another bundle of about 12 wires out of the ECU goes the other direction and has a separate connector just inches from the main ECU harness connector. From one website I've found, it states:

Yellow/Red stripe: tachometer signal
Yellow/Green stripe: Speedometer signal
Orange: Ignition start
Black: Ground
Blue/Green stripe: A/C signal
Blue/Black stripe: water temp signal

And then the rest of the remaining wires go to a "check connector" and are not hooked up to anything.

Is this all there is to hook this thing up properly and get it running???? What about the ECU, Fuel pump, and ignition relays and fusible links and charging system, etc???

Do I just use the 1200's electrical system to handle the rest of it, such as modifying/hooking up the old alternator wires to the SR20 connectors? There's got to be more to all this than that.

If anyone knows of a website, or knows themselves what more is involved in the wiring, I'm very keen to hear it!!! I imagine the CA18 isn't much if any different, so I know some of you guys have experience with this...so come on now...out with the info!! Help me out!

-Andy
