I agree, that on late model cars, like our Datsuns, the softer flames go better, but on cars that are ACTUALLY old, the high contrast flames [red & yellows over a black base] look much better. The original idea was to have the flames coming from the hood louvers on the side of the clamshell hoods. This was to suggest that the motor was so high performance hot, it was on fire.

Now we are playing with modern cars, but the classic flame job is still with us, but expressed in more subtle ways.

Suggestion
Go with unfamilia's advice & spend the money on fixing the imperfections instead of trying to disguise them. A quality plain finish will win out over a cheap, or second rate, glitzy one any day.

dont do the flames, spend the cash on more prep work for a smoother finish, youl be happier in the long run.
you can always get flames decaled on later to see if you like them first

Nice colour dude, very similair to my car's colour.

However, besides the different look I'm wanting, as you might know,
these cars are old, they have picked up many tiny dents over the years, and I dont want to start grinding and Bodyfilling much.
These Hail type dents show very easily with Metalic, base coat paints, and the last thing I want is to see these little dents especially in the sun.
So, The need for graphics, put a break up in what one sees on the car and these tiny little dents are not so noticable.

yeah i gotta say, ghost flames are the best.
things that don't JUMP out at you are often the best at standing the "fashion" test of time. ghost flames will be in for a while i reckon, whereas striking / contrasting flames are already passe.

remember those checker graphics that used to go on your front quarter panel?

I've seen a ute (not a 1200, but you could copy the paint idea) that was a grey-silver, and had blue "ghost" flames on it. The first few times i looked at it i never saw the flames. you could do something the same with white, just make sure you get the right colour. Also with this idea, don't do the whole flame, just do a flame outline.

just an idea...

I'm personally not a big fan of flames, but on some cars they look awesome. To me, the flames on 2332owners ute look good and I've seen similar jobs on hot rods and mustangs which really set the cars off nicely. Subtle flame jobs one or two shades darker than the main paint colour are the way to go.

Try Classic Datsun Motorsports for the flares.

I'd keep it to one color too. My truck's got flames (previous owner) and I can't wait to get rid of them. If you do them though, try low contrast. I get compliments on mine almost every day and they're just rattle can by the looks of it. Here's some pics:
