i am in the same boat. i have got my hands on a vl turbo 28 spline diff for $200 (non-lsd, but that can be fixed with a $100 minispool), but i am considering using the hilux diff as it has 30 or 31 spline axles. i think i can trust the vl one as is used to have one and never had a problem. my ute will be running a four link setup with either of these diffs.

Will you C.O.D to Sydney?

I'm running a 25 spline Commodore diff.

Cheers.

Coops, where in Brisbane are you?

Salisbury wreckers, $110 - Wednesday is auction day, they have new cars wednesday arvo. Give them a call after lunch to see if they have anything. They deliver!

edit: Er, that is for an open centre. . . LSD, I think they are after ~$500, but be prepared to get in line!

You can more or less use any diff that will fit (There's a guy up here running a V8 & 9 inch), but I'm going for the R31 as you only have to cut & re-spline one side (saves machining costs) & you also get to stay Nissan. The big problem is getting hold of one as they're getting rare.

There is also the option of getting a VL commodre diff & inserting the centres out of any late model Ford or Hoden LSD, but I'm trying to find a complete unit first to save stuffing around...........Any takers??

Guys are running tens, probably nines on them by now. I bought a BW last wednesday, $110 at the wreckers, watched them cut it out (saves getting a bent one from a side/rear hit). It is being shortened and the axles resplined today. ~$400

Will also have to budget a tailshaft swap. And have to do something about the handbrakes.

Prices vary depending on what you want to do. I cut and ground all brackets off and stripped the diff, saving a few dollars.

I am also up for new bearings, rotors and pads. The ring and pinion "appear" ok. Will be chasing a 28 spline LSD also.

I have a 25spline BW LSD (hemisphere only) for sale $100. Will go into pintara diff.

The other important thing is to get the pinion angle right, basically the diff needs to be the same angle as the gearbox.

The other thing is that you can "choose" your width to suit you wheels/guards. I am going 10mm a side wider to really fill the guards. (1325mm) There are some issues here, at standard width the hand brake mechanism of the calipers will hit the leaves in the stock location. If you mount them on top of the disc you will have to bleed them off the car (no biggie). If you go too narrow, even with them on top, they will contact the upper chassis rail.

Hope this helps, and doesn't discourage.

hey dude i snaped an axle the other nite trying to decide which diff to use hilux and 9" way to heavy so its either borg warner or R31 how much abuse can the R31 take and how much cost is involved.
