while you've got the tranny out it's a good time to replace the rear main seal on the engine ( unless you recently rebuilt it ) and the rear seal on the tranny where the output to the rear end is, that might be what's causing the leak.

yep, and to me it looks like its coming from the breather... no problem at all there, it just happens.

Thanks. I'll look for the leak and take a closer look at the mounts for cracks. This is exciting. I'm finally getting somewhere! I'm not getting my engine stand for a few more days but I hope to be tearing into the engine very soon after that. This will be my first tear down but looking at the manuals it looks pretty straightforward. Reassembly is a different story though...

if the mounts look fine then they are, they could be pretty soft but thats no problem aslong as the arnt split they will last

and with the leak, aslong as the box is still holding a decent amount of oil i wouldnt worry as a small leak will make a big mess over time but may not be worth fixing really, you should be able to work out where the oils coming from by just looking at the pattern its in basically it will centre around the problem

and then decide whether its worth fixing... maybe worth it while the box is out

Yeah they do tilt back that far as the mounts just turn on the bolts as the back is no longer supported. If the mounts are done up super tight it might not rest on the crossmember but will put alot of strain on the rubber mounts.

Ok, im no expert.

1) Depending on how long the tranny has been under your car, i wouldnt worry about all the oil covering it. Give it a good clean before it goes back in.

2) Just a guess, but i think your engine mounts may be shot. Ive pulled the tranny out of my 120y a fair few times, and never has my engine tilted back so far... I may be completely wrong, but to me that doesnt look normal.

No Problem!! Ok it was a little scary but nobody got hurt and nothing broke I think.

Couple of questions: The rear end of the tranny is covered with oil. Is this a sign of some problem with the tranny? See pic below. Also once I took it out the block tilted WAY back. It's resting on the front crossmember. Is that normal, or does it mean my engine mounts are shot? They look fine to me, but maybe they shouldn't flex that much???

I read something about damaging the output shaft in one of my repair maunals so I was worried about it. Sounds like it's not really an issue - that's good. The car is jacked up about 16" off the ground so I've got plenty of room to get under it. I'll give it a shot tonight if I get a chance to work on it.

I think I've got everythin disconnected. The drive shaft is off, reverse light connection and speedo are disconnected, the clutch slave cylinder is removed, the exhaust pipe is disconnected and mostly out of the way and I went ahead and took the starter motor off. I don't see anything else so I guess it's ready to go. Thanks again for the advice. BTW it's a 4-speed manual.
