you are right RC, but if you were up for a bit of work and wanted to customise your cars ride height and camber and castor with the addition of being able to run bigger rims because of the stub axle angle then this would be a good strut to start with. the brakes are good too.

if you wanted a lot less hassle the stanza sounds like a goer. dunno what the cost difference would be? i wanted to do it for the wheel choices and the brakes. $110 complete for the pair from a wrecker and where you go from there is up to you.

whats the benefit over a stanza strut with upgraded brakes???

or is it just that you dont need to upgrade the brakes???

single piston....hmph..i have four...hehe

just being silly yeah it would be good to get the strut cause it comes with vented discs straight off but sounds like a lot of work against the stanza strut that will bolt straight up

oh yeah, thats the other thing the bottom of the r31 strut does not fit on a 1200/stanza arm. a small ring spacer needs to be machined up.

Just to clarify, all datsun/nissan struts save 1200 and 120y up to and including R31 skyline(i havent looked at R31) and 280zx will bolt to a stanza or sunny steering arm, the sunny lower control arm is same length as a 1200 one but will accept a larger steering arm and ball joint. So you can use the sunny control arm with other struts to keep the same 1200 width or if you want wider track use the stanza arm. Then instead of having to modify 120y castor rods like every one does use the sunny rods. The sunny ball joints and the stanza ones are the same. Use stanza or sunny outer tie rods and stanza sway bar links because these are thicker. And i think that is all.

yeah the spring diameter is massive, has to be changed.

Grunterhunter: well i took some lower control arms off a sunny at the wreckers as that is what the all knowing (cough) Baz told me to do. they ended up being the same length as the stockies, but allowed for all the other larger stuff (steering arms etc.) to be bolted up with them. my car sits at a nice height at the front but has about 1 degree pos camber. this can't be remedied by extending the lower control arms as the wheels i am running would hit the guards.

the wheels you are running will play a big part in how it turns out - silvia type offset rims would allow for some extra length arms as they pull the wheel in close to the strut. i made mine around the rims i am running and i suggest you do something similar. i am going to end up needing adjustment in the camber from a camber top. i have a few theories about them so i'll be having a go at them soon...ish. definately making a custom setup like this for your car, but its easy to stuff it up, so keep researching as you are and you should end up with a good result.

Yeah, R31 spring diameter is huge.

Lagwagon: you said thet there were issues with positive camber on this conversion- Is that with or without replacing the lower control arms with stanza or sunny arms?

I asked Baz from Datsports that question about his R31 conversion struts, and he didnt give me a straight answer, other than they fit perfectly with 15x6.5 rims with a 38 offset..... Makes it difficult if you are trying to put in a proposal to the RTA, and they expect you to tell them the new track before you have done the job!!

Anyone have an idea how much extra track the R31 struts will give a 1200?
