I dont think I have ever checked anything when a gearbox has arrived.

I suppose I might give it a cursory glance to see if it fits a Datsun A series.

make sure its a dato 5 speed and if its a rally box or overdrive box

I pulled a gearbox from a trashed 1200, stored it and didnt realize it was a 5 speed until a friend came over and saw the smooth case and commented.. That gearbox is now in the 1200..

Yes, I would make a mental note before buying a gearbox to check the number of gears, as i have been caught out before!!
