An alternator requires power so it can begin to make power. Taking the power from it and then running the engine will not show anything.
Disconnecting the battery with the engine running, is a good way to #### a regulator.

May I recommend you visit an Auto Electrician and pay to get the problem fixed. In the long run it will work out cheaper as you will save yourself time and headaches and money on Panadol. Just a thought. Reason being, is that it looks like you are causing more problems in an effort to fix the original one.

if your car is and stock 1200 (original) and whit your test that you perform, than the alternator might be ok and the problem is the regulator or some fuse that power the regulator.
take care off this: you got one off the fuses thats power the regulator and them the alternator.there is no fuse to directy to the alternator.
a question: does the red light(batt or alternator) on the dash lights at all?
whem you turn the key to start the car or when is running ,the lights is on or bliking?
if doesnt ligth at all the regulator is f.... or is no power to the regulator.
pay atencion to the wires if are broken or dirty
or some rong conection.see if the warning red light on dashboar is blow.
this problem is not comum the this great machines .they are no electronics involved and the unique problems came on bad conections or dirt on the contacs on the plugs.
stay in contact
bye

ok delimma still appears to be here
alternator doesnt seem to be charging the system at all
Proof: disconected the main wire off the alternator so it wont charge the system. grouned a test light to chassis and touched it on the pole on the alt. no light
connect the wire back up and light comes on.
disconnect battery engine stops.
Note: the alt i got looked pretty ratty im getting another one off him 2mos. hopefully its only the ALT.

does this sound feesable?

cheers nick

if you conected the batery the rong way ,you might burn the internal diodes in the alternator.
if those diodes are dead or in short ,they cause problems like this that you refer.
to test this diodes you can try this simple sugestion:disconect all wires that goes to the alternator include the major one who is bolted in the back off the alternator.start the car and if the problem disapears than the alternator is dead.a new diode plate is needed.

Fuzes burn for a reason.
In other words;
There is a fault somewhere that has caused it to burn.
