Its roumered that you can have bigger engines in qld but check with your engineer only an engineer in qld will know.

Man I'm so lucky. here in the southern part of the U.S. ,I can do whatever I want to my car , no questions asked . As long as I have a bill of sale ,or title when available , tag is mine & I'm good to go. You guy's have some very stricked laws over there!!

1.8L is the max according to the bloke who engineered my coupe. Forced induction that is.

No engineering cert is given they just do a mod plate (the blue plate you often see in engine bays)
Cost me $77 I didn't submit my plans to DOT as long as cops see a mod plate they are happy.
Rotars is a 12A is the max you can go.

Speak to some one who has one approved already some engineers will see you coming $$ wise so dont roll yourself. and get help read up on it. plenty of info here on qld modified utes lots of people out there selling crossmember kits and doing diff conversions that are approved ,lots of info on brake conversions for 1200 s too........You can go 12a rotary have a look on ausrotary.com or ipswich rota club .plenty of cheep housings for sale and heeps of info on conversions .If yo do a rota conversion make sure u use the short 4 speed not the long one as its wont fit the shifter hole also you will have some fun fiting it your crossmember will have to be modified to suit the rota mounts maybe once mine are done i will take some photos for others that want to go a rota

Since its a requirement that you have to submit your plans to QLD Dot for approval - I would think the Dot would have to know whats allowed and whats not.
That doesnt mean just any old Dot branch will know. Like NSW you have a dedicated branch that has the rules and regs. Ask in any old branch and you will just get a blank stair.
Having said that, I have never consulted the NSW RTA, I have always spoken straight to the engineer that I will have pass it, but in NSW you dont need to submit plans to the RTA beforehand.

Talk to an engineer before you do anything mate. I have heard of people getting verbal approval from the monkey behind the desk at their local DOT, then doing all the work and taking it to an engineer only to have it knocked back!

An approved engineer will be able to answer your questions anyway as it directly relates to their job. My experience with DOT's had been that they neither know nor care.

I vaguely recall this being QLD's rules but best to check for yourself:

Motor swaps.
W = weight in Kg's
Capacity is in cc's
NA = Naturally Aspirated
FI = Forced Induction
For vehicles up to 1100KG's
Capacity NA = W * 3
Capacity FI = W * 2.5
For vehicles over 1100KG's Mono. construction
Capacity NA = W * 4.82
Capacity FI = W * 4
For vehicles with a seperate Chassis
Capacity NA = W * 5.46
Capacity FI = W * 4.68


Hope this helps, I can't remember where I got it from so, as I said, best to confirm for yourself or ask an Authorised Person (who I recon would be more informed than Dept. of Transport anyway).
