I had one befor that certainly was a "Shagin' Wagon" but that was a long time ago! These days it's mainly full of bikes n shut. When the poor ol thing finaly crapped out last year I tossed up whether to replace it or fix it. I bought it for 5 grand back in '95 so it owes me nothin. Putting the new motor in was xpensive + painfull but I'm glad now coz it's over and it runs better than B4.

I love Datto's & I hope they live 4eva!

One day I'mgona own a ute with a C18 in it and do donuts 4 eva!

Carjunkie, I hope it's a new head! It's alloy and I don't think the old one was. The old head had a buggered oil seal on one valve so at least they've fixed that. I paid $2000 for this motor (including a clutch and a radiator), the labor is always more for vans. Sunny, you'll be pleased to know I went to someone else for a new carby and he stung me $500. Both of these mechanics had big ads in the yellow pages and I reckon thats where I went wrong. I'm not a motor guy but I do own some spanners, after both these trips to the experts I've had to get dirty fixing what I paid them to do and I'm a bit over it.

Dodgeman, peace & mungbeans bro, thanks for the +ve!

Greg.

Thanks Ronald, sorry Dodgeman, thanks again for the help. I'm frustrated coz my motor's not right. You guys are GOLD.

This forum's been truethfully helpful for a while now. I spat it coz I was frustrated.

Long live the DATSUN!

Mate, we all get a bit wound up sometimes & I've been abused by experts, so your little bit of 'leting off steam' is no problem & no offense taken. It's all good.

I was working on the assumption that you sourced an engine with a head on it, & that on instalation, it was found would not accept the adjusting strap, which would make it an A10 or 1200 head. I wonder if it had ben a running engine, & if so, how did they affix the adjusting strap before.

I then assumed that the workshop that was doing the job, went & bought a head that fitted & worked, & that is the 120Y head that is on it now. It sounds like it performs quite well & you gotta be happy with that, but the need for this particular fuel may be a problem if you travel far from your home turf.

Anyway, it runs now, so if you do decide to find an A14/15 head, then you are at least in no desperate hurry for it, & you can just keep your eye open & pick up a bargain when something shows up.

You know, a Vanette has got to have a lot going for it at times. They didn't call them 'Sin Bins' [F*** Trucks] for nothing.

Good piont and an A12 carb on an A14 just aint right , different main jets, idle jets, air bleeds, venturies, would go so much better with the right carb.

You say that you were told that the head had to be changed. Im just curious to know if you were given the original head back? I would be a little suspicious of the mechanic if you didnt. an A14 head would be a lot rarer than a A12 and worth a lot more money. I thought it would'nt be very hard to tap a new hole to fix the problem,so you could maintain a reasonable compression. Lots of dodgey mechanics out there.
