interesting is that some countries (like oz) don't use titles. that would be fun to explain to the d-m-v

RE: japanese title, i was mostly joking.

re: chassis, look behind the ignition coil, it looks like the stamping for the steering is there, just not cut out. maybe i'm wrong.

i've never looked in person, i don't think the later ones are like that. i should looks an my car and see if the firewall seems to have the same stampings on each side.

not everything lhd is the same but opposite in rhd, the rhd has cable clutch and probably a different throttle cable setup.

imagine trying to get CA DMV to accept a title in japanese
You miss the point. They don't want a Japanese title. They want a bill of sale, and US Customs documents. Then it is yours. In California, cars ~30 years or older are exempt from emissions testing.

To import a car into the US, generally speaking you need:
1. Bill of sale
2. Receipt of steam cleaning
3. DOT waiver form (cars 25 year or older are accepted)
4. EPA waiver form (cars 20 year or older are accepted)
It's all on the US Customs web site.

Although I wouldn't doubt that the other country will want to see the Title before they let it go on the ship ...

it looks like that chassis had provisions for steering on either side. Are they all like that?
