Went to the drags last night

best of 16.82 @77.8 mph with a 2.5 sec 60 ft. into a 7knot headwind

best 60 ft 2.3
best mph 78.2

Leaning out really badly at speed under load so I was changing at 6000- should rev to 7k happily when I rejet the carb.

current setup:
1200 ute
54rwkw
A15, extractors, straight through exhaust, 23/26, mystery cam, most likley a 70/30.
4.11 diff, 185/60R14

So with a decent start & no headwind a 16.5 should be possible with this setup.

I did beat a VT family sedan

yeah man be crazy to get smoked by an A series down the quarter. after i saw the very clean thread of the A series with nos and quads (im sure we all know about that one) i was thinking i should sell my SR front cut

I posted in that thread too. Keep in mind that when people ask for the total cost of the CA conversion that's what they are given. To me, this means diff, cooling systems, suspension and brake upgrades etc, etc, etc. To build and install a correctly engineered 200hp A series turbo would require you do all this anyway.
Keep in mind I'm not talking about your basic suck thru or blow thru J pipe set up as there is little point in comparing these to a CA anyway due to the large power difference.
Anyway it's all food for thought.

i'm not sure if anyone else is impressed but 12.5!!!!

that is unbelievable from an a series! my ca slammed me back in the seat using all its twin cam 1.8l fuel injected technology for a 12.6.

Finn that is truly amazing, awesome job!

i think lower than figure to 130hp then a series would be the go, any higher go for a conversion

Matty- I have never actually done a CA conversion so dont know all the costs, awhile ago a thread was posted about CA conversion costs people said "easy over 7000". I would have thought 3-4000 would get you out of trouble??????? I am just going by other's

I guess if your goal was going to only be 200hp a-series would be the go but any more a CA would be more cost effective

Pager - How could a correctly engineered A series turbo motor be cheaper than fitting a CA?

Forget the driveline, suspension and brake upgrades, as they will be necessary with either motor choice.

Once you factor in custom pistons and rods, headwork, custom head gasket, head stud kit, turbo purchase, custom manifolds and injection set up, aftermarket ecu etc the bills start to add up big time.

A CA halfcut is $2000 - $2500. Add to that your crossmembers, loom modifications, clutch modification, tailshaft change and all the other small things that are needed in an engine conversion and I still think you would come out of it with more coin in your wallet.

The only way I could see an A series turbo being cheaper is if you, or a good mate, were very handy with a welder and a set of spanners and were able to make your own manifolds and build the motor yourself.

I ask because my preference would have been to stay with an A14 and engineer a turbo kit for it rather than fit a CA18DET but I couldn't find an economical way of doing it properly.
