just on the why its illegal thing, id be guessing that its for if the car is in an accident and the occupants are knocked out or stuck in the car, it needs to be easy for others to get them people out of the car

same reason that door popper thingos are illegal

Just an update, car is still in Maddat getting new brake lines.

Ive opted out on a half cage, thinking more on going full cage straight away. Will get that going after xmas as ive run out of money, once again...

I was having a chat with my local tyre guy today about cages and harness seatbelts, and we were saying the same thing. I do understand that some things are harmful or whateve, but if the addition of a half or full cage is going to make the car safer for the driver and passengers then why is it almost impossible to get them mod plated to be legal, and the same thing goes for harnesses.
I have a set of ADR approved harnesses that I would like to put in my sunny but can't because I want to keep it as five seat capacity. But what do you do I don't want to loose the car the first time the cops pull me over, all because I had the harnesses bolted in.

are you sure they didn't mean '2 seater'? in QLD, you could just have a engineer 'mod plate' it for a revised seating capacity of 2.

personally I'd go with a full cage though. cost bugger all extra, and would make a huge difference to both safety and handling. Single intrusion bars would be good too - I have no respect for a law that make intrusion protection illegal...

Bad englerish, seats already out, i meant bugger engineering it as a 2door for a cage. Will post up some pics next week of it all.

how many cops really know the exact legalitys of a rollcage, just take the rear seats out, looks neater that way and no one can really fit in the back of a sedan

Cheers for everyones opinions, much appreciated.

Car went in today to Maddat for new brakelines and halfcage.

I can convert it to a full cage at a later date when it gets too quick for the road. Apparently a Half Cage is legal as long as I engineer and register it as a 2door and remove the rear seat and rear door mechanisms, Im thinking bugger that, drive it, working afternoons I rarely see any fuzz on the road.

NBW (nickel Bronze Welded) Spacesframes are inherently very strong yes, and if cost is an issue in the manufacturing process then it is by far the best way. There is however one other welding process that, from a pure engineering point of view, is far superior to NBW. TIG welding. There, obviously cost is not an issue......

In short a list of welding techniques...from bad to best.
0: Manual Metal Arc (MMA), or ARC welding as we know it. This is BAD NEWS.
1: GAS welding (Oxi acetylene). Includes brazing.... better than the above, but that's about it.
2: MIG. Welding. Metal Inert Gas. very good and relatively cheap.
3:Nickel Bronze Welded: cheap and very easy to get a good repeatable weld. Bang for Buck, this one is top.
4:TIG (Tungsten inert Gas).... this is the way to go if cost is of no concern,

Very well said.

Sometimes people mig weld cages when I know they can TIG weld and I dont get it ?

There are no rules saying you can't build one yourself but it has to be tested by an engineer and given the thumbs up
