There was a bloke at the Southern festival of speed in Dunedin, who was from Oamaru. He had a 120Y race/rally car which either had a down port head, (AKA raised floor porting) or was going to do it to his next motor. (I don't remember exactly, too many bourbons) Chrisdattowagon at datsun.co.nz has his contact details I think.
Is your black coupe phil's old one?

a downported head is when you block the ports up with alloy weld and then bore down on a angle through the top of the head(sleaved) about a 20 degree or so angle. apparently 30Bhp right there.

So thats what downporting is, glad you cleared that up, your first post below, read to me like you wanted to decrease the engines capacity from 1400cc to 1298cc.

would anyone have any ideas on downporting a race 1400 GX to a race 1298cc engine.

Cheers for reply, but a downported head is when you block the ports up with alloy weld and then bore down on a angle through the top of the head(sleaved) about a 20 degree or so angle. apparently 30Bhp right there.

why not stick some massivley over sized sleves in the bores to bring them back down to the old A12 specs? suppose you would have to changew the rods and stuff aswell to accomodate the pistons so probly not

Ring Tony at Marsh Motorsport in Auckland, or Brendon at CSL in Palmerston North, and they will explain whats involved and how much it will cost. Tony will probably suggest a more traditional style of porting that works just as well.
