Cheers guys.

well ive just pulled the other side off and it looks like one of the cylinders on the oppisite side may be stuck, also ive now noticed that one of the cylinders in the side locking is now leaking. looks like some fun for me!!!

Oh also what kind of prices should i be payng for these parts, shoes, cylinders etc..

Ahh all wheel drums! does it get any better!?

Had this exact problem with my 1000 a couple of times both times it was as teretonga described a sticky/stuck wheel cylinder on the opposite side to the one that was pulling.

The quick solution is to open em up free up the sticky cylinder and whack em back together. if ya got a workshop manual grab it out - it's invaluable for reminding you exactly which way springs and levers go back in.

The groves will only be a major problem if the brake shoe lining has worn away and the metal backing of the shoe is wearing away at the drum. if they havent, they might just make your brakes squeal a little.

There are multiple places that can machine the inside surface of the drums for you, it's a good idea to replace the shoes at the same time if your doing this, and for the cost of new wheel cylinders or a rebuild kit it's advisable to replace em at the same time. should only take a day at most to do it all and its well worth it to have peice of mind about good brakes.

Good luck hope ya sort it out.

Is it possible that the wheel cylinder on the opposite side is siezed and sending the pressure to the locking wheel?

Check that the shoe springs are all where they should be. Pull the shoes off and see how the cylinder is. Check the wheel cylinder - if the bore is pitted it can jam. Or the internal spring may be broken or jammed too.

Thanks yeah ive got the drum off but nothing is jumping out at me as to why its locking. The only thing ive noticed is that the drum has more groves than a record but that shouldnt make it lock?

There will be an access hole in either the drum or backing plate to access the brake adjuster. There may be a rubber plug blocking the hole.
Using a small screwdriver, turn the adjuster wheel inside until the drum spins freely and can be removed.
If it stil won't move try and hit the outside of the drum flange where the shoes are pressing against. Use the hammer to hit towards you i.e from the inside of the wheel well out.

As I said I haven't pulled a 1000 drum off but this should see you right.
