This might sound stupid as a box a chocolates, but take two banannas, shove them skin and all into the differential. Now drive around for a while. Does the sound get less/go away? Then it's the gears. Banannas act like a very good cushioning oil in diffs, and will generally shut them up for long enough that when you trade the car neither salesman nor the next owner will notice for some time that something is wrong....

It stinks like hell when you do drain it eventually...

As far as I know the rear end was the same as the one I had before. Im not sure if the other car was manual or auto. Mine is manual. I do know that the car it came from belonged to an elderly women who got t-boned and died in the car. The wrecker told me the passenger side door was in the driver's seat. It may be possilbe that the rear end is haunted. I did have my friend and his dad (the own a body shop) look at the car. We jacked the end up and put it in gear and we were able to rotate either wheel backwards while the other was going foward. blah blah blah, the diagnosis was that the two "side gears" are messed up. Im not a mechanic so i may be butchering terms.

Strange question, but was the other car you got the diff out of a manual or auto, & is your's a manual or auto. It sounds like it's gone through the case hardening on the ring & pinion, so i'd hunt up a A10 510 then install the complete rearend. Grab the 510 tailshaft, because it needs to be shortened & the front yoke changed over to suit the gearbox. I don't think the stock 210 rear yoke works with the h165. Or turn the radio up

Naw, never. I've had many cars with warn diffs, they don't get worse. Even some Datsun.

Of course it could go bad for other reasons, like:
- run it out of oil
- donuts
- full-throttle starts and sticky tires

Sorry it has taken me so long to reply, guys. I dont have internet at home. The sound is indeed a whining noise that gets louder as the car picks up speed. Right around 60mph it gets a little quieter. This rear end was out of another b310 i found in a junk yard. The old one somehow sheared its gears. I have replaced the oil twice in about 3-4 months and the tires are pretty much brand new. I do not have mud flaps. Im pretty sure the noise is coming from the gears. My main concern is whether or not the diff will go out any time soon due to the problem. If so, I guess i'll have to find a 510 rear end.

p.s - does the 510 have disc brakes?

I don't think it would be easier to swap the whole rear end but the stanza (A10, H150 etc. etc.) rear end will bolt into a sunny (B310) with the correct tailshaft.

why dont you just upgrade to a H165 out of a stanza?
If you look at AgenWright's details you will see that he is in the US & the Stanza name was not used there, it was the 510. [A10 chassis code]
I don't know if the H165 rear end was used in the US version, but why go to all the trouble of adapting a different rear end assembly when a simple diff replacement would solve the problem. [assuming that the diff is actually the problem]

are the diff's for these cars generally somewhat noisey or should I be concerned about changing my gears?
They are usually quiet. Don't worry about changing gears.

Is it a whining sound, or a grumbling sound? The first may be gears. The latter, bearings.

If it is a sharp 'zing' sound, it could be bearings.

Don't worry about whining. Somebody probably ran out of oil once. It generally won't get worse.

Nissan.
