Yeah mate just drilled a hole in the side of the sump and welded a fitting on. Then welded a small baffle over the hole on the inside of the sump to stop gravity forcing oil back up under hard cornering.

Cool thanks Dave, I got a little confused as I was reading on someone's site about water cooling to the oil pump, and the FSM talks about the oil cooler.....but it's not something I have on my oil pump.

On the basis of Harry and a couple of other people I might not run the 'dattodude' oil catch can setup....got a week or two to decide though.

I think I know what you mean - the pipe at the very bottom of the photo below (just above the oil pump). That is the crankcase breather pipe, that connects to the pipe on the back of the intake cam cover - the pipe that points down towards the sump?

It looks to me that the pipes make sense going down there.

The pipe to the block that the drawing is talking about is the one underneath your inlet manifold which is plumbed around the back of the inlet manifold and into the inlet rocker cover. It looks like it could be water because it's only about 100mm long then goes into a hard pipe but it's actually crankcase ventilation.

Oh yeah that makes sense - so you drilled a hole and welded another fitting to the side of the sump?

Mildman - no photos I'm sorry but I hope this description helps.

Both cam cover outlets feed to a catch can mounted on the firewall in front of the passenger's side. The catch can has a small filter on top, baffles and steel wool inside. On the base of the catch can there is a fitting with an oil resistant hose that runs down past the turbo onto another fitting welded to the sump.

What sort of setup do you have in your CA Harry?

what actually happens with track work is different to what you find on a street car that's thrashed a bit.

My GTR and Supra get 'trashed a bit" on the street and don't ever get oil in the inlet/intercooler without a catch can. Do a track day and you get oil in the inlet tract & intercooler. why?

because trackwork is done at sustained high rpm. More oil gets pumped to the head under these conditions and doesn't drain back to the sump quickly enough. it gets past the baffles and into the ventilation system.

for trackwork I'd avoid any setup that has a cam cover connect to PCV/plenum. You'll still get oil in the combustion mix but only under vacuum, not boost so risk of detonation from lowered octane is reduced. At least it keeps oil out of the intercooler - oil in the IC is bad because it acts as an insulator decreasing efficiency - you get hotter, lower octane oil contaminated air into the cylinders that way = increased risk of detonation.

for a street car - unless you have blowby you don't need a catch can.
