Go with the RB20, as most states can register a 2 liter in a Datsun 1200.

here's a picture. This one only has a little bit of setback. I'd put it back further, say two cylinder inside the car, so that handing is as good as stock (after lowering the car that is).

Since RB26DETT weighs as much as a GM V8 it still won't handle as well as a 1200 with A12 or A14 engine.

Been done to a 1600 but there wasn't much 1600 left

Bad idea on a cost basis to build a car unless its just going in a straight line

Yes you can do it. It has been done more than once.
No you may not be able to get it registered, depending on where you live.
Yes it is good technically if you can set the engine back (cut tunnel, put part under the dash).
No it is bad idea if you put all the weight forward (no setback).
