Thats the reason why 9" grinders are all but banned in most workplaces. Dont get me wrong, I own one, but use it sparingly, and only when there is no other option. They are so heavy to use, have so much power, with such a huge reciprocating (spinning) mass, one slip, and as you found out, it ends in tears.

The story that your family still joke about is to do with my brother, which most of the Perth folk met at the targa races weekend.

At about the age of 12 he decided to clean up the fuse box for the shed on the farm, and managed to cross the active and neutral wires, and suddenly the entire shed was live with 240 volts. He was banished to his workshop with a battery only after that.

An intresting one at work (not me) was when a local decied to jump the fence to the pool late at night after the pub closed. It was hot and seemed like a good idea after a few beers. His wedding band got caught on the top of the fence, and it degloved his finger. He survived, and his finger is back to normal with a few stiches, and he is feeling a little sorry for himself..

Thats nasty!

i smashed my face in with a 9 inch grinder a couple months back ... was cleaning a bench with a wire wheel on it when it got tangled in my shirt, pulled out of my hands, swung round and BAM! in the face. broke two teeth and lots of swelling and blood. but all fine now and will have my teeth finally fixed in feb

Personally, I have escaped nasty accidents, but I can list more than enough to make a few people squeamish, thanks to my current jor role. Its amazing the stories of how people hurt themselves. People always seem to find a way around every control you put into place.

My brother is the accident prone one in the family, thank goodness

haha my wifes aunty work there as an rn...my old mechanics teacher after we made the rims for the gokart he continued to put the tyres on and the tyre would got to the lip so he kept putting more pressure in(bloody idiot) and the thing blew up in his face....ripped up his chest and acroos his neck and chin...150 stitches later, he thing built a cage when doing it was so lucky he didnt die, was a good teacher

Nothing to serious which is good considering I am a wood, metal and mechaniics teacher.

But I had a student who wanted to see how far the blade comes out on a biscuit cutter. So with it on he put his right hand over the end and pushed it with the left hand. Cut 3 fingers off 40 mm from the end. No the best thing to do in Albany with a S### emergency dept.

didnt take long to heal...my mate used to work for fielders here in perth and one of the night shift guys was feeding the safety plastic onto the ally as it went throught the roller and got his glove caught and then proceeded to feed him through the machine real slow...he was found the next day with all the bloody everywhere, not the way to go i would have liked!

i have had soo many injuries at work due to me being very accident prone...i have cut down the centre of my index finger with the bandsaw luckily it didnt go far but tried to pull my finger through, i ran into the office with my finger in my mouth trying to say i think i need help hahaha. My finger nail was rooted and i cut it down to the bone so wasnt really that deep but i got 2 stitches under the finger and they superglued my finger nail together

While putting excessive pressure on a razorblade it slipped and sliced the top of my finger, cut was about 5mm deep and went straigh thru my fingernail. nail was removed in surgery later that night and replaced with a plasic one till it grew back. that one got me 6 weeks of light duties.

The worst i have seen was a bloke get his glove caught in a 5" grinder with a cutting wheel, glove pulled his hand into it, cutting wheel entered his palm between thumb and index finger, he was lucky to keep his hand, 6 months of work, and has limited use of damaged hand.

But having skin sandblasted would have to be my biggest fear!
