1970-1973 Datsun 1200 (including GX) has tachometer wiring in the wiring harness. The tachometer runs off the coil + signal. It is a series induction wiring.

Most other tachometers, including Datsuns and other brands, run off the coil - signal. It is a parallel wiring.

A 1200 GX tacho is wired differently from a late model 1200 ute tacho.

sounds like a normal 1200 tacho, that may connect to wires taped to your loom. As it was likely an option even on the 2003 utes.
Otherwise you'll need to refer to the 1200 wiring diagram that shows that the tach loop just sits in line with the ignition wire to the coil. If you wire it backwards the tacho needle will go in the wrong direction. Find a diagram. 2003 model Utes are a ZA specialty

ok there will be about 4 wires and they should be labels an the back of the gauge

for mine i ran + to the + side of the coil and - to earth

as for the other 2 ,one of them will be for the park lights and the other for the rev signal , the rev signal will go to the negative side on the coil ,running the park light is optional ,but is good for hooning at night time :D ,this can just be run to the park light feed on the fuze box
