you need about 20mm(i think).
if you set it up to be hard in there what do you think will happen when your going over bumps and the tailshaft wants to move in and out slightly inside the gearbox.it wont move and you may wreck things.
on my toyota 5spd i have around 20mm moving room inside there.
anyone is welcome to correct me.

You cannot fit a 60 front case on a 63 box. The box is physically bigger.

You can cut-n-shut it -- maybe that what he did. In that case it will still say 63, cause the numbers are not on the bell part of the front case.

It's more difficult dd as he said the old owner states they put a 60 series bell housing on a l serues dog leg 5 speed- unlikely as we know but he needs to know yoke size to work out what box he has

how would i know if its a large input yoke and a large output shaft?

Easy - if it says 63 anywhere on the transmision, it is large output. If it say 60, it's small output.
