Oh ... and get it machined if it is 0.004 inch from flat. 90% of blown A-series head gaskets still have a flat head and need no machining. Machining is bad! Unless it needs it, then it needs it.

Man, OHV is far simpler than OHC!!! You can do it. The cam has nothing do with the head gasket in Over Head Valve engine. We got tips here in the (click) Changing Head Gasket article.

A14 head bolts do not commonly stretch, they are super strong. made of chromoly steel. Nissan used them in the 2.4 liter engine! Other manufacturers say use new ones each time because they are using a Torque-To-Yield one-time usage bolt. Not so with the A-series.

I would be a little careful reusing head bolts. The only true way to test if they are still OK, is to use a micrometer on the length. Its quite common for head bolts to stretch, and even if the thread looks OK by eye, if stretched enough they will give a false torque reading, and may even bottom out in the block. Its for this reason that a lot of engine manufacturers recommend getting new bolts.
Some engines (3.8-4.0 ford 6 cylinders, for example) actually get done up to a minimal torque setting, then turned an extra 90 deg as per the manual, and this almost deliberately stretches the bolt, so they can only be used once ever.

Dont want to sound condescending, but if you didn't know the A-series is a over head valve rather than over head cam, it may pay to, either pay a machanic to change the head gasket or observe someone who has done the job before.

First thing to do before anything else is to buy yourself the workshop manual.

Its not particularily a difficult job, but can be easily stuffed up, if you are unsure of what you are doing. The only specialty tool you will need is a torque wrench to torque up the head bolts. Speaking of head bolts, they can be re-used, providing the thread section is in good order.

My ute has only just been registered and it has a blown head gasket so I have the replacement gasket and head bolts and have priced the head to be machined. So what I'm after is sort of a guide how to do it, the machine shop said i don't have to remove cam only rockers as I didn't want to remove can has its a lumpy one and would have to be dialed in. So all I have to do I take manifolds off undo head bolts and remove head and rockers and get it machined but I was after info on proper installation after machining do I simply just bolt it back on with the new head bolts and retorque and put the rockers back on and reset the clearances for them and put manifolds back on ?? Please any info would help me
