If it was quiet before the valve adjustment, and after it is now noisy, then YES the valves are not correctly adjusted. The proper procedure was used I am sure, by the sound of it running. But the gap may not be correct. Use two feeler gauges, the specified one to set the gap, and the next one up to ensure it is not too wide gap.

Do you mean "similar"?

something does not sound right.

Probably two things:
* is the fan belt correctly tightened?
* other sound could be exhaust leak or valve clatter

When you performed the Valve_adjustment for 0.014 inch HOT, did you insert a 0.015 inch gauge to ensure it would not fit?

Or if you cant see the marks at all take out number one plug and hold a screw driver near the top of piston and when you turn it you will feel piston hit the screw driver TDC is when its fully up.

Remove the cap from the distributor. Rotate the engine until the distributor rotor points to either #1 or #4 position and points begin to open. Then you should see the 0 mark on the timing cover line up with the single mark on the crankshaft pully.

With the A-series engine, you can turn the engine clockwise or anti-clockwise. So it is safe to turn it back a little, then forward again.

I have done this to old A12 and new A12A. They are exactly the same.

Your copied procedure also seems to be the same, except for the use of the word "rock" -- I've never heard that before.
