The CHG light coming on does not indicate you need a different alternator. You need to test what is causing the light to come on.

What year is your 1200?

Is the CHG light always on, or does it come on only after it warms up? It should come on with ENGINE OFF, KEY ON. Then it should go off immediately after starting. If the engine idle speed is very low, it will come on again, but should go off if you give the accelerator pedal a nudge.

Take it one step at a time -- that's what a mechanic does. Because there are many many causes to the symptom of "engine stalling".

First, fix the alternator -- and your engine problem may be gone.

You may have removed the fuse for the alternator.

If the alternator does not charge, then late-model 1200 ute choke doesn't work.

You may have knocked a vacuum hose loose when changing air filter.

Dash pot on late-1200 carburetor may be loose.

There can be many, many causes for a the engine stalling. Start with checking the items above.

The charge light will come on whenever the engine dies.

So it was running fine a week ago, and now it is dying. What has changed in the last week?

Sounds like the idle speed and idle mixture needs to be adjusted.

Adjust idle speed to 780 RPM, then adjust mixture to best lean. Then readjust to 750 rpm.
