Haha , I remember those days, Yes the Marina 6 cyl would give my L34 one hell of a run, only cause it broke traction !! Nothing like a neck to neck race .......

those ohc sixes made stock 165lbs of torque so with webers and some work they would be a monster of an engine. There are a few turbo ones floating around in some P76 in their forums that outdo the v8s.

Leyland did not help this privateer one bit and it was a shame as it would have helped sales and kept Leyland alive somewhat.

That ohc 6 was supposedly built in Australia and South Africa

look at today and we have nothing like the 50-70s era of creativity

Interesting Cars, Where I live one of my neighbours worked for Leyland Australia and he brought home some interesting Cars Leyland Force 7V (P76 Coupe) but most interesting was a six cylinder Marina with tripple webers, Back then I owned an Torana XU1 (Damn I wish I still had that considering what they are worth now) anyhow that Marina was faster than my LJ XU1, they also had fitted custom double A Arm front suspension instead of the Macpherson struts, Well he did work in their Special vehicles Engineering Department where they did the testing for models to be released in Australia.

That particular car was very quick and it handled very well also so it proves any car company can make really good cars if they want to till the bean counters and production engineers get involved.

The Marina chewing fuel and 60+hp beat SLR toranas so the DNF for the 1200 was not as embarrassing

The car most loved to be hated by the rubbish English media ended up as the most reliable car that ever came from there or should we say here.

The James Laing-Peach/Bill Evans Datsun 1200 was a DNF in the 1974 race (Datsuns at Bathurst).

Some interesting reading about privateers and their struggles
and heres some good reading of the ill fated yet
very tough and underrated Morris Marina

This one was more budget than most of the cars here
placed very highly in Bathurst with almost halve the hp
that they managed later when dyno tuned after the race
and very bad economy from the untuned 2 inch SU.
Not to mention no previous testing or setups and
old 3 speed only suited to Valiants with 80% more cc
