Bryan. Can you tell me the brand of remote oil filter etc you used. I think I can get away with using the standard one but may have to unbolt one mount and raise the motor to remove the filter each oil change. This in itself is no big deal but if I can avoid having to do it I would.

Thanks.
G.

G'day Bryan. Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately I have to cut the crossmember that carries the rack. I've managed to mount the gearbox utilising the original mounting points but cannot get the thing back any further. I'd rather cut the rack crossmember than cut the gearbox crossmember. I've had to cut a section out of the bellhousing rather than modify the heater area etc. Once the thing is back together, the mod. won't be seen and it'll be easily reversed if someone wants to though I cannot imagine why they would want to! So far, things are going well albeit a little slow with work unfortunately getting in the way and the short one in the kitchen running the odd bit of interference as well!! Anyway, it's all good fun is'nt it?

Kind regards
Geoff.

I am 100% interested in learning everything about this conversion.

Eg. What's required ?

Certification standards etc... what engineers you are using ...etc etc..

Thanks heaps!

saw this done back in the early 1980's, a guy came into the dealer and wanted a tune up, the service writer couldn't believe that an owner of a british car wanted a Datsun dealer to tune up his car. until he opened the hood. same said service writer used to work for the British Leyland franchise down the street.
the cool thing about it was/is that if it wern't for the name DATSUN on the valve cover, no one would have been able to tell that the engine had been changed, it looked like it came that way.
in talking to the owner, he said that there was double the power, twice the gas milage and NO repairs to speak of
that motor and trans came out of a 1976 B210

Geoff,

I've did the same swap here in the States into a 69 Midget about 6 years ago - currently have my drivetrain for sale, as car met it's untimely demise earlier in year. I have a A14 / 5 speed combo from 1980 Datsun that I used in my install. I hope that you will resist cutting the front crossmember when undertaking the install! I trimmed out & reformed my trans mount & heater box plenum to clear back of bellhousing - used single groove crank pulley to clear front crossmember. Radiator was a recored vertical flow early Midget unit, with a high-flow 3-row core. Ran twin SU's on fabbed intake for carburation while I was working on sourcing a twin side-draft Weber intake for fuel injection install. Also had to fab custom header. Used remote oil filter adaptor to relocate filter to right front radiator support. Also, if you haven't noticed already, the Midget diff flange & Datsun rear driveshaft flange bolt right up!

Good luck with the install - it makes for a nice cruiser! If you have specific questions that I can help with, email me at determined2win@hotmail.com. There are a few cars running around in area with this swap...

regards,
Bryan in North Carolina, USA

There is a guy by the name of Don Ashton who has been running one of these around the Victorian Club Sprints and Hillclimbs for a couple of years and it goes pretty well.
It has a worked A14, Webers and a 5 speed.
He told me that the A14 and gear box weigs nearly the same as the Sprite engine gearbox.
