You're right, the heavier the box, the more difficult. The clutch alignment tool should help, and sometimes lowering the back of the engine will, especially if the bell housing is bigger than stock, it will give you a little more room.
I reckon you'll have a Speed Datto once you get that CA18 in. Hope it goes well.
Hey Mely, did we see you in the relay at Salt Lake on television? Those were very exciting races.

More like 8 months!!! I am a speed skater and have been overseas for a while. Dont get much time to work on the datto, gota have it done by the end of august before next season starts tho!!!
Just to recap for those in the back, I am doing ca18det, with a rb20box and ca18 bell. This gear box is driving me spare. Every thing else engine, except for exhaust is done. Oh, I need a new fuel filter.
Yeah the clutch fits, the spigot bush fits and is installed correctly. I got another clutch alignment tool today to see if that will make anything better, have not had a stab at getting the box in tho, just got the clutch in and aligned.
I could get the 4 and 5 speed on the a series done just about one handed. This one is much finer tolerances. Still got both of those in the shed, should sell them off I guess.
I think it is just the weight of the gearbox which is making me struggle. I am under the car on stands and cant get purchase on it to get it to mount the splines. Have got a bloke coming around tomorrow who has done heaps of conversions and he is gunna give me a hand. Ill tell you how we go.
Thanks again fellas mely

dumb, embarassing question, but is the input shaft actually going into the clutch plate centre & not just going between the centre & the springs.this is a pisser if it happens,& the only way to tell is to put your hand in & feel,& there's no room to do this.if it aint even going near the dowels, this could be a cause.this suggestion is all based on personal experience, done it many a time myself, especially when you've got just one hour to change the throwout bearing before having to drive the car to work.

To get my A gearbox back together I had it on the ground and wiggled it, as the clutch was almost aligned perfectly I ended up moving the gearbox up and down and pushed in then it just slid into place, now it's all bolted up ready to go in now. Cheers damo

The bell is a fit. I havent even got near the dowells. The spigot bush and splines seem to be giving me headaches at the moment. Think I might have to drop the engine to the ground and align it like that. Have to take the turbo off, the intake off. Id rather not!.
If I cant get it to go by tomorrow thats what Ill do.
Mely

have you checked the bellhousing? in particular the dowl's & dowl holes, nothing stopping them from slipping into place?
