I just got stung real bad trying to buy a 1200 ute! So take note so it doesn't happen to you.

I've been searching for a good condition 1200 ute for ages, then one comes up with a CA18 already in......I go around to look & the engine has a noise.......So I asked the question, to which the reply "Aw mate I had heaps of Mechanics look at it & they reckon it's O.K......It's probably just a timing chain rattle".

O.k I say (and we agree on a price) but I want my Mechanic to look at it....."No Worries" he says, but when the time comes to arrange it this guy conveniently goes shopping.........And then the funny stuff starts...."why do you need a Mechanic to look at it? you said you were going to buy it just buy it!" etc. etc.

Of course by this stage he's threatening to sell it to someone else, so I think to myself.....Well he said there's nothing wrong with it so i'll just trust him & put down a holding deposit ($400).........BAD IDEA!

When the inspection was finally done it was found that the engine was completely stuffed & needed a rebuild (the best price I could get was $3200)........So I made him an offer more in line with a car with a stuffed engine (i.e. 2K less) & he refused and KEPT MY DEPOSIT.

So now I have no ute and am $400 out of pocket.

I have spoken to the bacon & they reckon that I have to go through small claims to get my money (could take a year)

Like I said.....BUYER BEWARE.

I you are looking for a 1200 ute in Brissy, this one is green, has a stock diff & the guy's name is Andrew.........Be careful!

No, It wasn't registered but it did have all the engineering tags up to scratch.

That's the worst thing - It was a pretty tidy ute.......Just the W#@%er selling it!

I'm real sorry to hear what happened to you. Let's look at some real simple rules.

Rule #1: Trust Knowone.

Rule #2: When in doubt revert to rule #1.

Take him to small claims court, don't be discourged. You will win.

If that don't work I'll fly over an make him an offer he can't refuse.

on the bright side...you ONLY lost $400.
If you had bought the car without your mechanic checking it over........
You also learn a valuable lesson.....Might save you a headache when it comes to buying a house :)

You could do a full rebuild for 1-1.5k and still have a decent ute for 5k.

You sure it wasn't worth it?

Plenty of utes going down here for 4-5k with stock motors!

Bloke is still a dick though, don't let it go, get your cash back and teach him a lesson

Three words my friend,
HYDROLIC BRAKE FLUID!!!!!!!!!!

It will cost far in excess of $400 to repaint a ute. Let the baby have his bottle. hehehe.
Give you money card to a trusted friend to make a withdrawl on the other side of town while he is getting whats coming to him.

Yeah, a $1000 replacement engine would have done the job. $3000 for a rebuild...either you're exaggerating, or the mechanic is a total ripoff.

You mustn't have wanted it bad enough. Every secondhand car has it's problems, otherwise why would the owners sell??

If it was on sale for less than $7000 (good in all ways except for diff and bad engine), then it was still a good price, even with a stuffed motor.

The guy wants to sell it, he knows he's spend a lot of cash on it, and people who haven't done a conversion don't understand the effort required to do it properly.

I've spent nearly 40 hours on wiring the engine bay in my car over the past 6 days off. If I was a mechanic charging $90/hr that's $3600 alone, and $300 in wire relays and connectors (At mechanics prices). Doing it myself has cost less than $100.

Having a "daily driver" performance car is expensive. If you can't afford an engine rebuild at any time, then it's time to assess whether you can afford it, or learn how to do it yourself.

But the guy keeping the $400 is a bit "out of order".

Chris
