Something's not right mate. What condition is your motor in? Are your compressions good? Is it in proper tune? Does it rev out in the first 3 gears? Do you have the original 4.1 ute diff on board? Are you trying this on public roads?

yep thats reasonable for a stock A12...

Although a stock A14 can rev alot harder (7,000rpm) heh Teretonga!!! Ah those were the days!

Anyway back to the question:-

There will be 3 bolt on things that will give you revs on an stock A series...
A set of extractors (or even a GX manifold) with a 2 1/2 inch system
A downdraught 32/36 Weber carb
Electronic Ign.
You get these 3 things and would wont believe its the same engine.
Then you can rev the guts out of it day and night, and if she ever broke you just buy another one for $20 and bolt all the gear back on again.

For my 1200 coupe way back at SCCA drivers school I Ran a stock motor with 3.90 rear end and 185/60 13's. The car would do maybe 6000 RPM and about 88 MPH range.

Currently with GX Cam , H-production head , 37mm / 30mm valves , dual valve springs , header , 2 inch exhaust and 32/36 Weber - the car will pull 8100 RPM although I shift at 7800 and best speed on a really fast track is about 110 MPH downhill. Most tracks I see about 98 MPH.

Yeah that pretty much sounds like my old A12. 2" exhaust and electronic ignition gave me a little over 6000 rpm.

There was some carbs on the forum for sale a few days ago.
Get a L series bosch dizzy from a bluebird & take it to a dizzy workshop & get it modified
Or you can look for a a series electronic dizzy.

The E15 dizzy swap is so easy even woody could do it.
If your springs are old, they will start bouncin sooner. I ran competition springs, (doubles) part noCB4A02 in my blown A14. Hit a gear too hard, and the tach used to flick around to 8K instantly.

Thrashed old A12s Ive had in the past have always been screwed out to 6K. Given enough road, they could usually do it in 4th too.
Increase to breathing, give 'em more valve spring, and some more cam. Then Bob's ya uncle!

yeh my a12 used to pull to 8k then it was enough next gear, that was with a huge cam (280) 36 webber and 2inch exhuast. my 1400 only pulls to 7200 with a milder cam(270) head work extractors and a 38 webber, but does 160 in third and way off the clock in 4th
