Has anyone heard this rumor about Nissan changing it's name back to Datsun? I read it in a thread at a Nissan Forums website. I didnt check to see if it was outdated. I wonder if they're going to change the whole compay name or do like Toyota did with Scion. It seems to me that Nissan (or rather Renault) is exploiting the name to gain profit. Thoughts?

I doubt that it would happen.
Like any company, especially a well established one, it uses it's name to stand for it's product. To change it's logo, let alone it's whole name that it markets it's products under is a HUGE gamble!!!
I guess this is a little different cause it is reverting back to a name it previously had, but i really can't see it happening as a worldwide change over, especially in certain country's such as here in oz or in asia where it is a major established brand.
Maybe in those countries where the brand and sales are strugling they may take the risk. I dunno.
Would be good in one way as it would mean we datsun fans would be able to continue our passions with datsun vehicles even after the past generations of cars become impossible to find and very very expensive. Also would mean heaps more merchandise, and may even produced a renewed love and interest in the older generation of vehicles. This would mean values and availability of parts would increase which would sucks balls.
On the flip side if it turns out to be a cheap ploy to make cut price nasty little plastic peices of korean or chinese junk then it would cheapen the legendary name and that would be a tragic shame.

perhaps they will change the name on certain models like, they do with other brands, like the honda integra, is the Acura integra, and the tiburon(spelling?) hayundai coupe, and the whole lexus/toyota soarer....
would be cool to have another run of restyled models of ours roll of a production line.

Well the name Datsun was only ever a export name. To protect the Nissan name back in Japan if they never took off or got a bad rep. In Japan, all Nissans were Nissans.
I cant see a reason for them changing the name. As said before they are a major player and have no trouble with sales with the Nissan name.

I think Nissan already has Infinity for the fancy cars like Toyota has Lexus. There was talk of the Nissan Cube being released as a datsun last year.

i rember this rumor from 2 years ago. as toyota did with sircon and mercedees with smart cars, nissan were looking at bringing back datsun for low end affordable models to not tarnish the nissan brand name.
The move was/.is designed to sell affordable cars to the masses, at a cut price level. I just think Daewoo Matiz. But suzuki is keeping its name and will be importing from india... expect similar saftey issues as Holden is having with Daewoo sourced barinas.

Quote: the name Datsun was only ever a export name. You know very little about the history of Datsun. Datsun was a Japan-only name to begin with. Only after 20 years or so did they export Datsuns, and that was years before a single Nissan-badged car was ever exported. Read about it here in our club wiki: Datsun.

i thaught the first datsun was originally a DAT ( around 1910) then they changes to DATSON ( in 1930) then in 1932 changes to DATSUN because DATSON sounded like 'to lose money'
also i was reading that somewhere in Europe they actually were traiding under datsun but i think now they have changed thay had like datsun nivaras etc can any one confirm this though
