get someone else to wiggle the steering wheel and look where the movement is, may be steering box, or any combination of bushes/joints in the steering.

How much play? 20mm is factory amount of play in steering box. There is an adjusting screw on top of the steering box in the engine bay, clockwise will tighten steering up. Wear in the tierod ends will cause play.

Your always faster than me tyrie!

Its only about 20mm of play but when its on the road going in a straight line it will sometimes jump to one side

Not much. they are prone to choppiing out the facory bushes. Ring a parts shop and price up new ones. Should only cost around $25.
