my crappy diff is skrewed, has diff whine and the bearings have just recently decided not to be nice. i have the 1974 120y hatch back, which i think has the weaker diff in it? ive just dropped a lumpy a14 in it so something with strenght would be good. what have you guys put in your beasts?
later model diff, rebuild this one? stanza? 200b? i did look in the tech section but it doesnt show which are easier and better.
thanks

the H145 1200 diffs a common as muck (smaller ones), but tend to suffer the same fate as your current one if they are abused.

The larger H165 tend to be hoarded by those that have em, cause they can take a bit of abuse without self destructing.

In all honesty, i would just chase down a direct swap and not drop the clutch as much, but thats me I guess.

But in saying that, I think the 120Ys came with a BW diff as well at some point. You will have to confirm what diff centre you have, photos perhaps?

It's the BW68 that you want. The early BW still have the early type brakes on them and the later ones have decent girlock drum brakes. Is yours auto or manual? You'll need a tailshaft too.

All 120y coupe's came out with the jap diff and brakes only.
The 120y sedan's from 1977-78 had the BorgWarner diff in them and they had PBR front brake calipers and booster aswell.

I own a 1974 and a 1977 120y coupe and they both run jap diffs and brakes, I also had a 1978 120y coupe and that also had the jap diff.
The 77-78 120y sedans with the BW diff also had stronger/bigger tailshaft uni's in them and the flange where it bolts to the diff is slightly different aswell.
Cheers, James.

1200 ute diffs arent hard to find...everyone with a CA usually goes an R31 diff so the h165s get sold

or yeah the BW68 is just as strong, but 3.9 gears are about the only common ratio for them
