Alternator for late a12 engine

Couple of questions:

1. I have a late model a12 from 120y, Mitsubishi type alternator. Can alternator be mounted on the left side with the early bracket and no modification? I checked wiki but I am not seeing info for late a12s.

2. When viewing starter motor from above , which terminal is positive or negative?

Cheers

hi been looking at your ques. -- Well you just disturbed me now [1200 forum routine] I got up to go have a look and the ANS. is yes they fit both sides --How do i know? I'm one of those nutters with 2 datsuns [as if i ain't got enough problems of my own] The one has the alt. on the left and the other on the right. Looking from the front the left one is higher--almost cyl head height --one on the right is low --under water pipe coming from front of engine --which is good thing cos i remember having one which was above the water pipe -- came loose dropped down and cut the pipe -- had to use mcgyver tricks to repair[tube and wire]As for elec i dont have clue --when the teacher said come to school i thought he said you bloody TOOL -- so did'nt listen to him LOL

Right. It is the same alternator. But there is no bracket for the late A12 that fits the left side. The bolt holes on the engine were changed. See club article Alternator, section "Mounting". A simple bracket adapter can be fabricated, there are photos in the article.

There are no Negative terminals on the starter. The big one is the POS battery cable and the small one is the Start wire. The solenoid has a third terminal which connects to the starter.

Regarding starter motor: This wiring diagram is indicating to me that there is both a POS and NEG to the starter?
Open in new window

Additionally my starter solenoid has two threaded terminals of large gauge, both identical in size. The third spade connector I already have sorted.

Regarding alternator: Sorry the tech wiki made it seem like the bolt spacing was an a14/15 issue not a12.

The starter of course is grounded/earthed, but not via a cable. It is earthed via the bolts connecting to the transmission, through the engine block.

The two large terminals on the starter solenoid are:
* POS battery cable
* Starter field (lead going into starter housing)
Which one is which depends depends on the exact starter model. There were at least eight different starters for A12. You can tell by the curve of the field lead which terminal it goes too.
