I have converted my a14 from blowthrough turbo back to carby with a weber 32/36 but cant get it running right. It starts and runs but wont idle below about 1000rpm. When i take it for a run it revs out ok but it misses when under load in higher gears under about 3000rpm. It does the same up steep hills. I am running a low pressure electric fuel pump 1-4psi from the boot so am thinking possibly lack of fuel? I am going to try a 4-6psi pump this weekend. I have also noticed it spits back through the carby a little. A mate told me that the timing could be retarded so I have advanced the timing to 15 but am thinking this may be too high? What would people suggest i try?

Possibly timing.

Wondering if the Vaccum advance on the distributor is connected ?
It was probably disconnected when had the turbo setup.

Na its not connected. Its electronic ignition with no vacuum advance port so no option to connect it. Ive heard its not necessarily needed if timing ok???

Vacuum advance is not needed for an A14 engine.

What engine is that from? It may have the wrong spark curve (or no curve at all).

Changed fuel pump and runs a bit better up hills. Still spitting a bit and missing though. I can only think its the timing. Gonna get a meter to check leads and play a bit more with the timing i guess. Cant think of anything else.

It could be many things;

* fuel pressure not correct. It should be 3.2 psi
* carb busted
* mechanical advance broken
* bad leads

and many other things. Do the easiest checks first. That don't require any tools nor any time practically. Like inspect the inside of the distributor cap. Check the rotor for looseness. Visually check each lead. If you pull a lead out of the cap and it's oxidized, that a clue that it may be bad.

All the A-series I have seen, including many N10s, and the A14E/A14E, all use vacuum advance. So likely someone has modified your distributor. Maybe they locked the mechanical advance, in which case it will be no good for a non-turbo application.

Oh, and if there is a fuel regulator, unplug it and bypass it. If it runs better, leave it unused.

Ok so timing is fine. Still running bad. Leads all fine. Still running bad. Checked spark plugs. Gunked up and black. Cleaned em up with petrol and sandpaper. Ran much better till i took it round the block and got progressively worse. Checked plugs when i got back and black again. Checked oil catch can that i only emptied last week and its already half full. Piston rings???

Black and oily? Probably piston rings. Time to do a Smoke Test.

Or black and dry? That's carburetion problem, or maybe intermittent ignition.
