I bought a Datsun 1200 sedan brand new in 1972, and drove it 90,000 miles from 1972 through 1981. This included a drive from Seattle, Wa. to Anchorage, AK and back. It was such a buzzy, and fussy car. Here's what i remember about that car..... the terrible upholstery on the seats that split as soon as i bought it, the oily residue that fogged the inside of the windows, the terribly weak heating and defrosting system, the extremely poor accleration when cold, the premature wearout of valve seals at 40,000 miles...the cheap and tinny wheelcovers that everyone kept ripping off, the long throw on the gearstick from first gear to third gear...the precise steering, the good brakes that never were touched for 90,000 miles...the iron clutch, also never touched....the poor cooling system and lousy radiator that left me stranded in Eastern Washington....the starter burning out and leaving me stuck in downtown Seattle....and these are only a few of the things i remember after 30 years. Please tell me why anyone would be interested in keeping these cars?????

Cos they ain't boring..I think most of us at this club like tinkering and modifying our cars and 1200s are perfect for this. A similar example is that many of my friends have owned MGBs for years. They have sold the unreliable and old sportscars for the new improved cars from Japan i.e. MX5/Eunos/ Miata. Within 6 months they have started looking for MGs again as the modern cars are too reliable and lack "soul". Crazy but true...

but all a Datsun 1200 was, and will ever be is a commuter econobox. I live in Idaho now, and haven't seen a Datsun 1200 on the road for years....are there still some out there? I have a Triumph TR6..so i know about British cars...oh by the way....the big criticism in 1972 when i bought that Datsun 1200 sedan...was that it was boring...go figure!

well i think i should join the 1200 club...seeing as i bought one brand new in Seattle, Washington in 1972, and drove it for 9 years.....what better qualifications would i need? I find it fascinating that people are forming an interest in a car that i drove for so long and found to be just a "basic means of transportation." I've had responses from New Zealand and Australia....how about the USA? Honest to God...I haven't seen a Datsun 1200 on the roads here in the USA for at least 10 years. Is this strictly an overseas thing? I'm really glad you checked out the TR6 clubs. I've had a TR6 for 18 years and love everything about it....See here is the way it is..when i had the Datsun 1200, I always longed for a TR6.. Now that i have a TR6.....I'm totally fascinated by people who like the 1200. Please...tell me more..I'm trying to understand your passion. Plus I can give you lots of stories about the 1200...I had some of my first fun in its backseat!...It sure brings back memories.............

Hey..who is the dipshit? I don't have a Mirage...I have a Triumph TR6. I made it a point not to buy another Japanese vehicle after the 1972 Datsun 1200 Sedan I had. Although i don't really need the hostility..I said..I'm trying to understand.....Actually..I'm what your club needs...a guy with a sense of history....a previous owner of a NEW Datsun 1200. I got stories..just ask me questions. Oh, by the way..I did most of the work on that car myself so ask away, but PLEASE...lose the hostility. One thing....is this an Australian thing or what? All the 1200's must have been exported from the USA to the lands down under.
