can I use a gravity fed spray gun on conventional air compressor like 2.5HP with 40ltr tank to spray paint acyrlic base paint?
I heard most High Volume Low Pressure (HVLP) system uses gravity fed guns and I know you have to use a special compressor for it with high CFM, big tank big hp

just wondering if theres a version for conventional air compressor

cos I've been reading different comments about it, so really confuse which one to use for a DIY spray painting

Are you wanting to lay base colour or undercoat?

I did a heap of research on what you need to use to get a good even coating of paint.

For most spray guns available, you will need to have a minimum of 15cfm compressor, pushing about 115psi out. The tank size is not critical, but it allows your compressor time to relax between pumps. A bigger tank is always better, but not critical.

Reguardless weather you have a gravity or a suction type, you need these pressures and volumes to get antything to work well.

I spoke at length to my local panel beater about this. His suggestion was to not bother with the high pressure, low volume stuff you are talking about and get the biggest compressor that you can afford.

I run a 17 cfm compressor, which is the biggest that you can get on single phase and I use a gravity gun or top pot, and have had no worries with it so far.

basically, my opinoion, get a 17 cfm compressor, 40l tank minimum, and go and speak to a trusted panel beater for some specific advice.

I do know that you need a 2.0 mm needle for the filler.

I'm not after a show finish just for my daily and for experience.

and also sticking with solid colours (easiest to paint)

you need to clean the surface, fill with you bog, and sand to the desired height, then use primer/filler. usually primer acts as a filler anyways. then go over the car with a stop putty to finish all the minor scraches from sanding that are too big for the primer to fill, sand, prime again. fine sand, prime again if you want (not neccesary), then go for the top coat. Do that in several goes, fine sanding between each coat. make sure that each caot is completly dry before sanding otherise you make more work for yourself.

After a heap of topcoats, you can run a clear over it. i dont know anything bout how clear is applied, never used it.

With the setup you have i would do all the prep work, primer, filler, etc...

(sand sand sand), rinse repeat.

until you have it a smooth as a babys bum, then take it to a panel shop and get a 2pak
colour cot done, and it won't cost you a hell of a lote more than the cost of the paint.

you will be far happier with the finish that way.

when u sand the first couple of coats of colour, use wet and dry paper and make sure it is dry before ur next coat, and try getting a couple of them big lights on the stands and point them at ur car when painting it, it will help with the finish etc and make the paint a bit harder.
