From the limited info i have gathered about this engine conversion, i will need a new trans. tunnel, thats as far as i have got. Has anyone done this swap? i know it will be tight but does it fit?
ANY help or words of advice would be muchly appreciated.
cheers

let me say first off that I haven't done this swap.

But I have fitted an L20 to my 1200, and I have owned a 1000 with A14. I seriously doubt it will fit. In fact, I'd put money on the L20 being too tall for a 1000. The L20 block is a good 3/4" taller than the other L series blocks.

I'd be taking measurements off a Stanza L16 engine (its got the sump where you want it for a 1000), especially with regard to engine height / bonnet clearance. I suspect it will hit the bonnet too, but I'd happily be proven wrong - a Thousand with an L16 would be a good little <1600cc class contender...
You're right about the trans tunnel, it will be a problem too.

what the hell, polish the rocker cover and cut a hole in the bonnet

yeah for sure that'd be hot!
Do you know what in terms of engine mounts? you say the L16 sump would fit, does this bolt to the L20?

go and have a look at a l20 then look at your 1000 engine bay and see the impossibilities are fairly numerous!!!!

yep - fabricated brackets on engine block and x-member.

I was recommending staying away from the L20, and of the other L series engines, Stanza has the most suitable sump for the conversion. But the L20 sump is the same. I'm not promising it will fit without modifications though.

something compact. the first engine that comes to mind is the...ahem...Toyota 4AGE. There are pics on this site of this conversion in 1000s, and even these little engines look big in a 1000 engine bay.

But don't totally disregard the A series engine. The 1000 is so light, a mild A12 or A14 gets them moving quite nicely. And they are a dead easy swap.

maybe consider the Nissan E15 turbo? you'll find discussions on that swap if you do a search.
