Dropped in at the wreckers this arvo to check out ca20 bell housings and r30 5 speeds for ca18 conversion, but non of the bluebirds had sepperate bell housings.Maybe they were'nt series3's.How do you tell?
Also all the skyline boxes were taken but the trans code on all was FS5W71B.Now there were no trans codes for the b/birds or r31 pintaras(ca20) but there was a s12 gazzel(ca20) with a non split box and trans codeFS5W71B. So does that mean this box is the same or as good as the stumpy box I'm spose to be chasing. I'm a bit confused but I have a couple of better s/s wreckers to check out on the weekend so if anyone in the know could set me strait kinda quickly it would be much appreciated.

Hey
I ran a stock CA20 box in my bluebird behind a CA18DET for around 2 years and never had a problem. I'll also be running one in my 1200 as it will bring the gearstick forward 50mm compared to the S13 box. I have a 71C and a 71B box and i cant see the differance (does anyone know) one is SR20DE and the other is CA18DET. And the CA20 box uses the same bearings as the S13 the only diff is a the gears are a bit narrower and a selector shaft is 2mm wider. So if you put a bush in an SR20 bell housing you can run a CA20 box (might be handy for people doing an SR conversion)

Someone else will 100% confirm this but when they say bell housing in the case of this swap. They are actually meaning the bell housing and half the gear housing. I dont think any of these boxes has a true seperate bell housing like the one you are thinking you need to find.

Thanx for the prompt reply boys , much appreciated. So if I was to go to my local pinch a part and pull a r30 box and a b/bird box and combine the two in the yard so as to buy the exact box I want, will this involve playing with shafts, selectors and gears or does it all stay intact whilst under the knife?
OR... if I go the b/bird,pintara, gazell option, does one of these boxes offer better ratios spacing?

joeninety, centre road always have plenty of CA20 boxes and usually a few stumpys too. it'll take you a while, but i'd do the old take two boxes out, split em and pay for one trick.

you'll be in for a bit of fun splitting them, i can't remember the exact tricks, but i know that it takes a lot of wiggling and prying. it will look like it has split on the gear selecter side of the "sandwich plate" but the bellhousing does definately comes off by itself. oh, i just remembered... you need to take all of the obvious nuts and bolts out, and the plate that goes around the input shaft... then heres the doosy - there's a circlipy kinda thing around the shaft you need to remove. and before you put it together you need a different bearing. but i have the part no. of that, let me know when you get there.

sounds a bit muddled, it might make better sense when you are doing it all.

good luck!

Ta lagwagon ,I'm always up for a challenge. If you stumble across that part# just post it on here or give it to 1200rallycar.
Do you recall the price on a 5 speed at Centre Rd.Any special tools for the job(circlip plyers I'd imagine)?

definately a hammer, don't be afraid to give the boxe(s) a decenty love tap. the rest is just fairly normal sort of tools, maybe a large pole or screwdriver to lever with? the bellhousing is seperate on them both, i promise! the combo should set you back about $125. while you're there can you have a lookout for a brake booster off a 120y or a 180b (i think). they are the smallest ones datsun came out with and i need a newy for datnats as mine has a vaccuum leak. good luck buddy!

cool lagman, I'l have a look.I thought the sunny was the last one to run that booster hence the best chance for one in good nick. And matbighat, I am running a std centre console so the shorter the better. Maybe ask the missus that question and see what she says..
