OK now I'm really ready to drop the tranny but I'm not sure how without damaging the output shaft. Is there an easy way to do this without buying an expensive transmission jack? I've got a small wooden cart that I can fit under it but I'm not sure how to make a cradle for the tranmission. Anytips or tricks? Or should I just put some stands under it, unbolt and pull it off by hand? Thanks for the advice (as usual)>

i'm not totally sure what tranny you're pulling out, but it doesn't really matter. it will be a lot easier if you have a "trolley jack" that is on wheels.

basically support the gearbox with something and undo all the bolts around the bellhousing (this is after you have taken out the tailshalft(whatch for the oil that'll come out) and the clutch cable and gearstick) wiggle the gearbox a little and pull it out. if you don't have a trolley jack just get some stands and put them underneath, or lay in a suitable position and you will be able to hold the weight of the box quite easily, then just rest it on you chest and move it to the ground.

as long as you are reasonably careful you won't do any damage to the input shaft at all. with the light a series boxes (or even an L series) you will not need to buy an expensive jack, just improvise with what you have.

I basically pull out gearboxes for a living and there is no way you will damage the input shaft or output shaft in any way buy taking it out unless you try something really stupid. You can undo all the bolts in the bell housing and let it sit there falpping in the breeze. Give it a rather large yank and let it hit the grass aslong as doent have to drop i metre to get there, then pull it out from underneath the car.

Any more questions on the issue just ask there are heaps of people on her that have the know how and have dont it the (bodgy....without a jack) way before.

and make sure you have disconnected the reverse light solidnoid on the side aswell, dont wana be pulling these off.
Just get uunderneath it and (this is what i do) rest the g/b on your knees and wriggle it out and then slowly let it down on your legs...a hassel but works!

I read something about damaging the output shaft in one of my repair maunals so I was worried about it. Sounds like it's not really an issue - that's good. The car is jacked up about 16" off the ground so I've got plenty of room to get under it. I'll give it a shot tonight if I get a chance to work on it.

I think I've got everythin disconnected. The drive shaft is off, reverse light connection and speedo are disconnected, the clutch slave cylinder is removed, the exhaust pipe is disconnected and mostly out of the way and I went ahead and took the starter motor off. I don't see anything else so I guess it's ready to go. Thanks again for the advice. BTW it's a 4-speed manual.

No Problem!! Ok it was a little scary but nobody got hurt and nothing broke I think.

Couple of questions: The rear end of the tranny is covered with oil. Is this a sign of some problem with the tranny? See pic below. Also once I took it out the block tilted WAY back. It's resting on the front crossmember. Is that normal, or does it mean my engine mounts are shot? They look fine to me, but maybe they shouldn't flex that much???

Ok, im no expert.

1) Depending on how long the tranny has been under your car, i wouldnt worry about all the oil covering it. Give it a good clean before it goes back in.

2) Just a guess, but i think your engine mounts may be shot. Ive pulled the tranny out of my 120y a fair few times, and never has my engine tilted back so far... I may be completely wrong, but to me that doesnt look normal.
