Hey everyone,
was hoping to ask if anyone has done a 4age 20valve conversion in a datsun 1200 coupe.
If u have, can u tell me any issues you had an were they hard to fix.
Does the gearbox fit comfortably in the tunnel, unlike the CA18.
Ive heard with the CA you have to take the whole engine out to change the clutch.
Is this the same with the 4age.
Im not lookin to make a drag car, just a reasonably powerful street car.
Cheers

please put your location in your profile. and no, no-one on here is likely to be able to hunt your datsun down and steal it from you by knowing the state you live in and your alias on 1200.com.
the 4AGE has the starter on the "wrong" side of the engine, making fitting a little trickier. you have to offset the engine to one side a little to make it clear the steering - it's very obvious come dummy fit time anyway.
i've personally never heard of anyone having to cut the tranny tunnel to make the toyota box fit.
toyota engines (like datsun engines) are very reliable and i don't think reliability will be an issue.

im from sydney.
Can you maybe point me in the right direction who could make up a crossmember for me or would i have to give him the whole car an get him to custom make it.
That way seems to be so expensive.
Any numbers would be much appreciated

Just angle the engine so the sump is level. This should give you the right angle. the 20v has the dizzy out the rear, you may have to go crank angle sensor. Have you already brought the engine? The t50 is a nice fit in the tunnel but I had to cut the 2 1200 g/box mounting bolt holes away. Have not had to change the clutch yet but if you angle the engine back when dropping the the rear crossmember I think it won't be a problem. Search normo in forums and photo album and it will have some pics. Do not take the extractors straight down, The idler arm comes across and will hit. The extractors will have to be made but rum them parallel to the firewall. Get a spare crossmember cut dutto mounts right off and have someone fabricate cardboard mounts and make them. good luck, they are a fantastic engine.

Have a search in the archives- datsik has done the conversion and reckons that it was hard work. Shame cos the 20v is a killer engine.

My conversion took three months on weekends. All up cost about $3000, doing all myself. Frustrating, almost gave up twice...and then I drove it. not sorry now.
