Today I replaced the fuel filter and all of my fuel hoses. I used 5/16inch (8mm) hoses. During this process I removed that small alloy fuel rail that runs around the front of the rocker cover and used hose instead, running it around the back of the engine this time.

Problem is...

I started the car up and it idled for about 30-40 seconds untill I'm guessing what fuel was left in the carby had ran out and it promptly died is the arse.

Now I can't get fuel back into the carby and the car wont turn over.

I can get fuel to come up through the new filter by sucking on it (and yes I got a very putrid tasting suprise in the process!) but if I try and suck on the hose (stop laughing!) up towards the carby end I cannot get any fuel into the system. While sucking up towards the carby I can hear a small whirring noise in what I think is some sort of regulator.

Fuel filter > hose > regulator? > hose > carby

Any ideas on how to get fuel back into the system?

Cheers in advance
Steve

PS - I need the car running soonish because I've got a datto cruise to go to on Friday night! Which all Canberra local Datsun owners should attend by the way. Dickson Woolworths carpark 8th (this Friday) 8pm

Does the filter have an anti drainback valve in it, and is plumbed in backwards?
Is this on an a series 11/21/310? They use 1/4 tube and hose originally. Maybe the suction side of your fuel pump is sucking air.

The car is a b120 with a standard a12 engine.

You are right about the standard hose being 1/4inch. Would this be the reason? I've used good clamps on all of my conections.

The simplest answer is to put it back the way it was.....if that works - then it must be something you've done....then it will be a process of elimination.

Pop the fuel hose of the carby, pull the IGN lead of the coil - crank the motor - see if fuel comes out of the hose (into a jar you hold over that hose).

If that works then you should be good - if it doesn't if either fuel filter wrong way round? or fuel pump in trouble.

It's all in the workshop manual (the fuel system diagnosis) by the way.

haha, wish I could put it all back. I kinda destroyed the old frail hoses getting the suckers off.

I'll pop down to the parts place and get some 1/4inch hose tomorrow and put the alloy fuel rail back on and see how it all goes.

Apart from that is there anyway to prime the fuel system prior to starting the car?

EDIT - Well dont I feel like a newbie, just found out that the fuel pump is what the filter connects to... HAHA! Feel so stupid right now, always thought that most fuel pumps are located inside of the fuel tank itself...
