I though i would thow it open to everyone out there:
i recently started my A15 which is in my project ute and found it didn't want to rev.
it has: tuned twin weber DCOE carbs 11.5:1 compression cam, springs JTS head other stuff etc, but most importantly it has: HEC 715 Bosch coil NGK BP5ES plugs new high tension leads Datrats modified bluebird distributor
now. what i have done is taken out the ballast resistor, so that the coil runs on 12V (as it is meant to), i have wired up the distributor correctly (pink to positive...) i have the leads on the right plugs and on the right spot on the dizzy.
so i started my engine, and it idled fine. lumpy as expected, but fine. let it warm up and went to give it a few revs and it started to die. sounded like the noise a 2stroke makes when you start it on old fuel (like its not firing...)
it has fresh fuel it has enough fuel there are no air leaks started fine without chokes.
the only thing i can think of is that the coil isnt recieving 12V as it was supposed to. old wiring/dirity connections have dropped it to 10V. could this be the reason my engine is useless (it cant rev) past 2000rpm?
anyone help me please. my mechanic couldnt so im gonna do it myself, #### the useless bastard, to him my ute is just a pile of scrap.

1.) Check petrol filter 2.) Check fuel pump 3.) Distributor contact terminals ( below cap ) 4.) Rotor arm 5.) Battery & alternator
errmm..thats all i can think of

check the accelerator pumps on the carbs..
thay can be an issue if the carbs have been sitting, and the jets are small..

have you checked the ignition timing?

I gather you have had to re-install the cam? Check the cam to crank timing

Oh cam another thing...make sure you have a fuel regulator on it. I set mine to 1.5 psi at most. If you are running a 4-6 psi pump its way too much youll need to knock it back. This used to be my old engine and is sweet as a nut when running.... yeah those carbs have been sitting for a while the accelerator pumps could be an issue.Plus the jets could need cleaning. I dont know how they have been stored since I had them...

Firstly: petrol filter is new
Secondly: fuel pump is new facet blue electronic one. running regulator (which is screwed all the way out, so its running at or < 2psi)
3rdly: Battery is new and alternator is charging fine, it was the one off my old engine as the bosch one on there was a different one (plugs didnt match)
I will check the distributor contacts tomorrow when i get it home from the mechanics. altho they should be fine, dizzy is brand spankin'
Plugs are a possibilty. apparantly the BP5ES plugs arent renound to last a long time, even if they havent been used... havent had the engine running properly before, as i said, it is my project and i just got it running the other day, only to find shes caught a bad case of unreliablulous enginous syndrome. is running on all 4 though at idle, as revs pick up though it gets a bit shakey. thats why i think its the coil/weak spark. not fuel related.
Accelerator pumps could be an issue, infact the whole carbs could be the problem, freight and time could have screwed screws in/out a bit etc... will have a look at them when i get it home.
Ignition timing: havent checked it, i took it to the mechaniic primarily for them to put a timing light on it, but i dropped it off there, came back in a few days and they said it didnt even start for them... shoddy cunts that fiddle and blame it on others.... so they didnt even look at it.
anyway, the Zane said he put the base timing at 14deg BTDC will check this myself though
if the cam was in the wrong spot, then i would have bent valves and the thing wouldnt have started at all...
Thanks for the tips guys. keep them coming

yea plugs have done wierd things for me in the past, ive had four new bosh plugs die eg no spark at all even when cleaned/correct gap, changed plugs and ran perfect. Was only running approx one hour under no load, didnt get a refund either Maybe the coil is doing wierd things for you. Can you whip out a plug and lay it accross head and check spark quality, that might help!

try using some cooler plugs like BP6ES or even BP7ES, sounds odd but every now and then my current A15 wont rev past 4000rpm, change the plugs and it's as good as new? never been able to figure out why this happens, but the cooler plugs definately last longer than the BP5ES plugs Also check the voltage at the coil, and when you said you "removed the ballast resisitor" did you replace it with a piece of cable to join both ends of the resistor wires together or did you just leave both wires off and un-connected to anything? I definately think it is spark related but perhaps to rule out fuel problems try giving the carbs a dose of carby clean through the fuel inlet hoses of both carbs and try starting it, it will run like crap with carby clean in the fuel but could help free up sticky pumps, floats etc.
