Hi all. I'm looking for a few extra horses out of the L20b and I was thinking of ditching the standard viscous fan and using an electric thermo. I'm looking for raw performance not fancy looks. So any advice is welcome. I don't know what size or brand or type of fan (s) to go for , and what other bits and pieces I will need. Oh yeah, did I mention that I am frugal as all heck so I'm not going to pay huge coin. There are plenty of wreckers around here with mountains of parts, so I reckon I can source almost anything.

The viscous fan is better than a permanent mechanical fan. It only kicks in when the temp tells it to. I would'nt bother changing to electric fan.

Yeah true, the viscous is a good comprimise between theromos and fixed fans, but a thermo would have to be better.

i dont know if it would actually give it any extra hp, but its gooa put less strain on the motor since it doesent have to spin a fan.

A davis craig unit would be good, since they are usually faily slim profile, but they can be a up towards $150-$250, so going to the wreckers might be cheaper.

I have a pair of thermos form an old audi that are nice and slim and about 6" diameter, so try that.

Yeh new thermo fans go for stupid money! I cant see why? A repco brad one was $300!!! Sure it was like 19" but $300!?!?

All i have in front of the thou is some misc reversable fan i got off a mate for free. Works well. Its off some early FWD car or something.

here are my twin 12 inch peugeot thermos mounted on my camry radiator, when on they are enough to get rid of any heat that happens to get in there way

probably slight over kill, but it looked lop sided with only one on there
but for raw performance do you really need a fan at all, or do you need this raw performance while stopped at traffic lights?

took a fair few fuses to say it was too much before they would stay on

also two VL commodore thermos would be a bit more overkill than my setup and easier to find, only reason i didnt use them is because they were about 5mm so long to fit behind the grill on my 1200
the and peugeot ones are all alloy

I used a single VB-VH Commodore thermo fan on the front of my radiator with the L series. Think I paid $20 from a wrecker.

Well a quick trip to the wreckers and picked up a 16" electric fan off some sort of holden comode for a sweet $20. Woohoo !
I've got to say that I'm interested in the whole idea of not having a fan at all. Although..... nah . Cancel that idea . A hot engine is not a cool idea.
So the next step I spose is to remove the existing(perfectly good) viscous fan. I have that all worked out....... just keep taking bolts out until it hits the floor. Next is to bend up some alloy for mounting brackets, and err... then ..... err then what?

The you must get a relay to wire it up.
Then you must get a correct temp thermo switch to switch it on and off.For my A series engine I used a 1400 Pulsar one.
Kicks in at 85C and off again at 81.
Then you will have to fit it somewhere to read the temp that comes from the engine to the radiator.
Then you will have to hope it works.
