I know use a non nissan engine!

I was at the junkyard looking for a throttle stop screw since nissan uses a thread pitch not easily available even at my good metric hardware store...

subaru flat 4 engines are really short and sit low and are all aluminum, and came in sohc, dohc, and turbo. Also came in a flat 6 as well as the usual flat 4. Seems like a rwd only tranny or some mods to the transfer case and it would work.

Old subarus are as narrow in the front as a 120y so... Why has nobody done it? there will be heaps of wrx engines soon at junkyards.

2.2l engine = The EJ22 long block weighs 185 pounds.
yeah a subaru tranny might weigh a little more than ideal, but still...
EJ 25 might be up to 275 lbs without tranny...

10 lbs lighter than a CA18DET and already significantly more displacement...

tranny better weigh a lot to make it not worthwhile...
I can't find a number worst case its 150Lbs...

To convert a 93 - 2005 subaru AWD tranny to RWD, 2.5 hours and $350 USD, looking for weight still...

would be a good to hear the boxer note comin from a datto but you'd be the first one doin it so it wud be a bit more pricey compared to ca18.

the big thing about subarus is their gearboxes are ABSOLUTE ####E. any decent power put through a wrx box and they shatter. although maybe in a rwd the stresses would be less? hhhmmmm

An aquaintance of mine built a Trike(three wheel motorcycle) with a Suby motor and unmodified trans axle and rear diff. Above 35 mph the trans would unlock the rear output.

He went with an older trans and it all worked out.
I built a "BOX" for the back seat for this monstrosity. I will dig up some pics if I can find them.

Have seen this done to a 1600 but not a 1200. I have no idea what gearbox they used though and that might be an issue as these days all subaru's are AWD. The only one I can think of that wasn't was the old subaru leone and I don't think that would bolt up to a late model engine. Does anyone know of a RWD only gearbox that would fit ?

the conversion to the AWD box is apparently pretty easy, so I don't think that's an issue, Cusco for one has had RWD subaru trannies for ages.

unless it adds a ton of weight it seems like a doable conversion.

the engine mounts would be pretty easy to mod i think, since they still have cross members and aren't transverse mount.

seems like it would make a wicked conversion.

I just can't find a weight on the tranny.

hehe here that's not an issue ;)

even a 2.2l would be nice, there is a 2.0 liter, and you could always use the 2.0 turbo engine without a turbo, that would keep you legal in those cases.

using a modern engine and tranny has some nice benefits, there won't be SR20's forever. and someday all the toyota trannies will be gone.

the 2.2l can be stroked to 2.4l but it's pretty expensive.

We discussed this a few years ago but no one has tried it yet.

It is perhaps appropriate since most of the 1200 Coupes were built in Fuji Heavy Industries factory. But don't think about doing this to a sedan built in the Zama factory.

Consider an awd transmission with driveshaft going to the back. The subaru rear IRS has a square frame bolting pattern it should be relatively easy to fit that to the 1200 (compared to some other IRS setups).

I don't know if anyone has measured, but I doubt the flat four engine will fit between the 1200 strut towers. But with coilovers you can probably get enough room in there.

1200 perhaps not, but i suspect in a 120Y it would work.

Those engines aren't that wide really, and the 4 cyl is very short in length.

I'm not even thinking of using the subaru IRS, it would need a 200sx rearend or the H150A would die very fast.

It's a real possibility I think!

If you want the note of WRX, you can use a split system on a straight 4. Its not the same, but very similar.
