Differential Noise

My differential seems to make a lot of noise in my b310. It seems to get louder as the car picks up speed, varying at certain frequencies around 50mph or so. I've tried changing the gear oil a few times. The last time I did it I put in Lucas gear oil. It seemed to quiet it only slightly. I guess my question is: are the diff's for these cars generally somewhat noisey or should I be concerned about changing my gears? Keep in mind I dont have a back seat to help block noise. If I do need new gears where can I find them? Thanks!

Firstly, have a look at your tyres. If you have a mud & snow pattern, then this could be the source of the problem as they seem to make noise particularly when worn.

Next, do you have mudflaps? If so, then see if one has folded upwards & is rubbing on the tyre. This can sound like a bad diff.

Finally, it is probably not necessary, or even economic to repair the differential if it is faulty. There will be a tag on the firewall with build details on it. One line will read something like
Transmission F4W60L .. HA38

It's this last bit that's important. This is the diff spec. HA38= H150 diff in 3.889 ratio
You might also see other ratios like 37 [3.7 to 1] or 35 [3.54 to 1] You might also see the letter code HB which is the H150A differential. This simply means that there was some change in the design but it's still interchangeable with the others.

Armed with this info you can source a replacement differential from a donor 210, but also many B210's also used the H150 in 3.889 to 1 ratio [usually rounded to 3.9 to 1] Be sure to use a serviceable gasket when switching diffs

They are usually quiet. Don't worry about changing gears.

Is it a whining sound, or a grumbling sound? The first may be gears. The latter, bearings.

If it is a sharp 'zing' sound, it could be bearings.

Don't worry about whining. Somebody probably ran out of oil once. It generally won't get worse.

If you look at AgenWright's details you will see that he is in the US & the Stanza name was not used there, it was the 510. [A10 chassis code]
I don't know if the H165 rear end was used in the US version, but why go to all the trouble of adapting a different rear end assembly when a simple diff replacement would solve the problem. [assuming that the diff is actually the problem]

I don't think it would be easier to swap the whole rear end but the stanza (A10, H150 etc. etc.) rear end will bolt into a sunny (B310) with the correct tailshaft.

Sorry it has taken me so long to reply, guys. I dont have internet at home. The sound is indeed a whining noise that gets louder as the car picks up speed. Right around 60mph it gets a little quieter. This rear end was out of another b310 i found in a junk yard. The old one somehow sheared its gears. I have replaced the oil twice in about 3-4 months and the tires are pretty much brand new. I do not have mud flaps. Im pretty sure the noise is coming from the gears. My main concern is whether or not the diff will go out any time soon due to the problem. If so, I guess i'll have to find a 510 rear end.

p.s - does the 510 have disc brakes?
