Hi all,
I'm trying to swap diffs in my '74 120y sedan (old one is making horrible bearing grinding noises) I can maybe get one from a '76 coupe but the uj flange is different. Mine is rectangular, new one is square. Is it possible to pop the uj apart & swap ends or will the diff centre just swap over. All suggestions gladly accepted
Cheers
Bob

depends what diffs they are

but your best off just getting the tailshaft from the same car that the diffs coming from assuming that its using the same gearbox

Thanks. I'll check the tail shaft length to be sure, but I would think they'll be the same.
Cheers

actually i could almost garrentee that they are different

but if they are both running say 4 speed manuals then the tailshaft will work

but pretty sure out of the 3 diffs that 120ys had that all the tailshafts were different lengths

'the '74 sedan will be a H145 (studs and nuts holding the centre in)

the '76 coupe will hav a H150 (bolts holding the centre in)

and the flanges are very different

if the '76 was a Sedan it would have a Borg Warner 68 (removable back plate)

however....

if you have a 2.5mm plate made up.... You can out a H150 center in a H145 housing!

Mawler is pretty much on the money except for two small points.
The Warner rear axle assembly was used in Australian assembled 120Y four door Sedans from July 1976 only. Sedans up to June 1976 & any that may have been imported from July 1976 will still have the Hitachi differential.

The difference in spacing between the H145 & H150 is indeed believed to be 2.5mm, however to seal the oil in the axle housing a gasket, which measures .5mm, will be needed on either side of the spacer, so a 2mm spacer & the second gasket will add up to the 2.5mm that are needed to maintain correct rear axle alignment in the housing.

Thankyou for the info. I was about to just stick the new diff centre in the old housing! I read on wiki about the spacer but it just didn't click.
I have the whole rear assembly so am I better off just swapping the whole thing over? I was trying to aviod having to disconnect everything and swap brackets etc.
