Not too bad. They look pretty sweet. Trying to see how much longer we can get out of the gears by polising them.

your the gear expert around hear, but I wouldent hav thought this would be a good thing?

I would hav thought having polished finish would alow it to sqeez the oil out and over heat?

at work we make some "working surfaces" with hand scraped deliberate imperfections for oil to dwell for this reasone?..

I'm no expert, but when you look at a gear under a microscope it looks a bit like this ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ and the gear or part in general is open to many varied fatigue points. But if you polish the gear you attemt to get a super smooth finish like this ________ and the most obvious flawed parts are smoothed out making it more difficult for a crack to start. Also the gears have a squared edge on the leading edge of the crownwheel that when under load on the pinion it bites into the root of the gear causing it to pitt and wear through the hardening. The polishing removes the squared edge and hopefully we will see the pinion gear last a bit longer. To give you an idea, the crownwheel / pinion is dealing with around 500nm of torque and is not much bigger than that of a H190. The unpolished setup lasted 3 races and cost the customer over $2K plus a casing and repairs to the value of around $6K. The Astin DBRS9 crownwheel pinion is supposed to be replaced every 2500Km reguardless of wear and they come from Astin polished for racing so we have decided to polish the gallardo stuff including drop gears to see how much longer they last. It should be considerable.

You can but not for the traditional diff arrangement. As possum said, it just won't mesh. We do straightcut diff gears for Evo 1 thru to 9. And we are looking into beefing up a gearbox for the KTM X-BOW which has a VW Audi box with a simular arrangement. 1 input, 2 layshafts and a diff, all within a compact little gearbox with 6 massive gears and reverse. Pain in the bum.

With our regular gears, polishing can extend the life of the gears by a considerable amount. In some cases, indefinatly. The polishing would be no more useless than knife edging the crank or shot peening your rods in your A series. Or shot peening your rods.

In other words, it is something you might do for racing.
