it should have a gap from the neck of the rad by about 1 inch, but the coolant should still be above the fins of the top tank by about 1 inch as well.

There will be a small pocket of air at the top of the rad.

Any idea why the A-series like to blow out the coolant till it has a 15-20mm air pocket in the radiator? it always worries me a bit especialy when im racing. I am running a 1.1bar cap on an aftermarket S13 radiator and it still will blow out about 200ml of coolant if i top it up (in hope to let it cycle coolant in and out of the coolant catch tank I build)

yeah you need the coolant catch tank withthe s13 set up, it has a recovery style cooling system on the rad cap. needs to pull and push coolant in and out as required.

its not just a series that do it, any engine that runs fairly hot does it too. the coolant expands as it heats up and has to go to overflow, shrinks when it cools and draws back into the rad.

Yes, Bert is correct: "None, unless you have a problem". I haven't added water to my Datsun 1200 in over six months and the level is still correct.

And Yes, the Datsun 1200 owner's manual says to fill the radiator only to "1 inch below the filler neck".

u had a new head gasket not long ago, isnt it? temp in the midrange is ok, so u must have a leak somewhere, check all your hoses and clamps.
