Morning,

I have acquired some head shims, they look quite good and seem to fit the head well. The hole that accommodates the locating dowel could be a little tighter but I'll amend that on the next batch.

These are intended to space the head away from the block hereby reducing the compression ratio, lower compression ratios are beneficial to turbo applications. These can also be used to run heavily milled high-compression heads on standard pump petroleum.

The price has changed as I have changed laser cutters, the first group was a great price but only if we requested a massive order. This was my mistake as I hadn't followed up the pricing vs quantity (also didn't read the quote properly).

Price:

Approximately AUD$60.00 (I will try to get this price down).

Specs:

Bore: 78mm (other sizes can be made- please inquire).

Thickness: Stock sizes are 2mm 3mm 4mm and 6mm

Postage:

AUD$5.00 - 7.00 depending on distance. For example $5.60 from me to Brisbane.

Express postage AUD$10.00 approx

Additional Machining:

I also suggest that the items be machined to prepare the surface for the contact adhesive. I can have them machined for you at additional cost - I still need to investigate pricing, but it shouldn't be too drastic. Because of that stuff-up I understand if you can't give a little extra for my time drawing the shims up - I should have bloody read it properly.

Your Order- Guidlines

If you require a 3mm spacer then be sure to order a 4mm shim- you will then need to machine 0.5mm off either face.

If you require a 2mm spacer then be sure to order a 3mm shim- you will then need to machine 0.5mm off either face.

If you require a 1.5mm spacer then be sure to order a 2mm shim- you will then need to machine 0.25mm off either face.

If you require a bigger bore (these are 78mm), please contact me.

Here is the old list of interested individuals, are there anymore people interested?

Get them while they're cheap fellas. All the additional stock will be listed on eBay at a higher price.

Submitting the order today, still taking last minute orders. Great item to have on in the collection, might come in handy one day.

Sorry these are taking so long. I'm in another battle with this laser cutter who has changed his prices saying there was a price rise in steel..... I know there wasn't one so I've written back insisting that I supply the material myself, should hear word back this week. I've come to the conclusion that laser cutters are a difficult kind of people.

Hi Chris,
Mate there was indeed a 11% increase in the tonnage of steel that took affect in May. Although some manufacturers where not advised untill June. This is affective for any stock ordered from that date.
Remember 11% of material. Not overall which includes labour ( the major componant of costs here ).

I could work out the actual increase if you want but its neglitable.
If you want a letter from all the major suppliers give me your email and ill send it to you.

Cheers and good luck.

Ben

Oh okay, so the rise affected buyers of China or India? Or both.

The price has changed by up to 60% and after suggesting that I supply the material myself the price only changed by five or six dollars an item so I don't know what on earth is going on.

Thanks for the information, we get steel out of Tropex in NZ and when I asked if there was a price increase I didn't hear of anything. Normally there is an 'issue' with the manufacture process when the price is on the rise, this means they can start selling again once they think it has peaked. Another good indicator for us is how many scrap metal companies there are, normally you see a whole heap of South Africans rock up into town (when the prices start to rise) ready to set up their buying station. It seems they know when it's coming because they arrive months in advance.

My email is in my profile so feel free to send me the letter, thank you.

Hey Chris,

Just a quick thought,

What material are you having the shims made of?
The reason I ask is that I have just pulled the head on my my L28 280c (as it seemed to have a head/gasket leak. I had fitted a ACL 1.5mm shim when I did the turbo conversion 2 or so years ago.
It seems the head shim has acted as a sacrificial anode and coroded quite badly around the water jackets into the cylinders.
I had run quality coolant/inhibitor and the block is well earthed.

Are you using stainless steel?

Anyways,

G O T H E D A T!!

Hello Greg,

Thanks for bringing that up. Personally I believe that if all contact surfaces are clean, flush, level and the head bolts are tightened accordingly in staged torque settings the mild steel shim should be okay.

Interestingly enough I have the original head gasket off my B10 that was the old 2 layer metal shim and material overlay type and it's made of mild steel (yeah even Datsun grade mild steel). It looks fine to me after how many decades it was on there. I only removed it last year after I found evidence of gasket failure in the rocker cover (very messy).

As you can see it is in fine condition as it is, in fact it was the material sheet overlay that failed not the mild steel.

Here is the extract from the factory manual about the steel head/block sheet;

I guess if there is no severe contamination of the coolant things should be okay and if the surfaces are clean and well set then I wouldn't expect too much corrosion.

On another note if SS is a preference I can certainly inquire about costs etc.

I'll update this thread soonish, just a little short on cash at the moment. There are issues with getting these machined down too it's almost impossible at a budget price.
